Modern reading

Hexagram 38 depicts fire rising while water settles, representing natural divergence and the need to seek harmony amid difference. Classical tradition indicates that small and practical matters remain auspicious when one focuses on pragmatic cooperation rather than forced uniformity.

BaZi chart

The structural tension between lower Metal and upper Fire reflects contrasting thermodynamic motions that require thoughtful energetic balancing.

In traditional Four Pillars analysis, mitigating Fire's harsh control over Metal typically benefits from the harmonizing presence of wet Earth or the moderating influence of Water.

Cultivating internal flexibility and respecting contradictory elements within the chart helps maintain dynamic equilibrium.

Western astrology chart

Planetary oppositions in the chart emphasize distinct perspectives between personal identity and external partners or environments. Rather than signaling irreparable division, this polarity highlights healthy individual boundaries and sparks productive contrast.

Approaching interpersonal friction with objective curiosity transforms opposition into creative momentum.

I Ching casting

With Fire ascending and the Lake descending, Hexagram 38 embodies directional divergence where grand collective mergers face natural friction.

Classical commentaries emphasize that small, concrete matters meet with good fortune because manageable tasks bypass ideological deadlock. Directing effort toward modest, immediate goals yields steady results where sweeping consensus cannot.

Career

Workplace interactions may encounter cross-departmental friction, contrasting communication styles, or differing strategic viewpoints.

Forcing large-scale institutional consensus under such conditions invites pushback, making it far wiser to advance discrete, pragmatic deliverables. Focusing on specific technical steps while honoring different viewpoints resolves day-to-day friction effectively.

Wealth

Financial interests can diverge easily during this phase, making joint ventures vulnerable to misunderstandings regarding resource allocation.

Traditional analysis cautions against large-scale speculative pooling when long-term visions do not align, favoring individual stewardship of steady cash flows. Keeping budgets lean and personal accounts transparent protects financial stability.

Love & relationships

Close relationships may feel strained by emotional distance, conflicting priorities, or simple differences in disposition.

Classical readings counsel against demanding total conformity, noting that respectful personal space allows underlying affection to breathe and soften discord. Granting each other room to be different preserves the emotional foundation far better than heated debate.

Health

The upward flame of Fire contrasted with the descending moisture of the Lake points to potential discrepancies between upper heat and lower cold, such as restlessness paired with digestive sensitivity.

Classical wellness traditions suggest calming mental agitation and nourishing yin fluids to prevent internal dryness from worsening. Maintaining a tranquil daily rhythm and emotional calm helps restore internal harmony.

Personal growth

The Great Image teaches that the exemplary person maintains individuality even while participating in the broader whole. Encountering opposing views offers a valuable opportunity to refine critical discernment without lapsing into reactive hostility.

True personal maturity comes from standing firmly in one's own truth while extending goodwill to others.

Compatibility

Pronounced contrasts in values, lifestyle choices, or communication habits will naturally generate occasional friction between partners.

Traditional compatibility readings note that when differences are acknowledged without contempt, contrasting temperaments can complement rather than sabotage each other. Long-term harmony depends on celebrating mutual individuality rather than demanding uniform behavior.

Fortune periods

This period brings varied agendas and shifting alliances, requiring personal composure and tactical self-reliance.

Classical foresight suggests dedicating this phase to refining specialized personal skills and executing routine tasks rather than launching complicated collective mergers. Quiet diligence in everyday matters keeps momentum steady across a fragmented social landscape.

Annual reading

The annual cycle features divergent perspectives among associates and partners, testing your capacity for patient negotiation. The first half of the year favors pragmatic compromise on practical matters, allowing deeper mutual understanding to mature organically by year's end.

Embracing flexible expectations keeps your path smooth even when others walk a different road.

Name analysis

Nomenclatural balance suited to Hexagram 38 benefits from characters signifying tolerance, bridging, breadth, and gentle reconciliation to ease the friction between Fire and Metal.

Integrating earthy or fluid qualities helps soothe dry, confrontational tones within the name's energetic fabric. Choosing names of warm, expansive resonance fosters cooperative goodwill and social ease.

Date selection

The energetic quality of this configuration discourages high-stakes partnership launches, major merger signings, or public ceremonies dependent on absolute consensus.

Auspicious timing favors dispute resolution, independent research, routine administration, or mediation using neutral elements. Selecting dates focused on practical, low-friction activities supports favorable outcomes.

Feng Shui

The spatial dynamic of Fire above Lake often reflects sharp environmental contrasts, such as conflicting airflows or an overabundance of harsh southern solar exposure.

Traditional spatial practice introduces warm earth tones, ceramics, or rounded furnishings to buffer the intense interaction between Fire and Metal sectors. Softening aggressive design lines creates a grounded atmosphere that eases domestic tension.

Judgment

Khwei indicates that, (notwithstanding the condition of things which it denotes), in small matters there will (still) be good success.

Tuan commentary

In Khwei we have (the symbol of) Fire, which, when moved, tends upwards, and that of a Marsh, whose waters, when moved, tend downwards. We have (also the symbols of) two sisters living together, but whose wills do not move in the same direction.

(We see how the inner trigram expressive of) harmonious satisfaction is attached to (the outer expressive of) bright intelligence; (we see) the weak line advanced and acting above, and how it occupies the central place, and is responded to by the strong (line below).

These indications show that ‘in small matters there will (still) be good fortune.’ Heaven and earth are separate and apart, but the work which they do is the same. Male and female are separate and apart, but with a common will they seek the same object.

There is diversity between the myriad classes of beings, but there is an analogy between their several operations. Great indeed are the phenomena and the results of this condition of disunion and separation.

Great Image

(The trigram representing) fire above, and that for (the waters of) a marsh below, form Khwei. The superior man, in accordance with this, where there is a general agreement, yet admits diversity.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiJudgment

Kuí is pronounced kǔ-guī-fǎn [kuí].

Kuí means contrary, divergent. As a Gua, Fire is above and Lake below; their natures oppose each other. The middle daughter and younger daughter do not direct their wills to the same home; hence it is Opposition.

However, in terms of the Gua's virtues, it is joyous within and luminous without.

In terms of hexagram change, it comes from Li (Fire) with the yielding advancing to occupy the third position, or from Inner Truth with the yielding advancing to occupy the fifth position, or combines both from The Family.

In terms of the hexagram structure, Six in the Fifth Place attains the Central Position and resonates below with the firmness of Nine in the Second Place.

Therefore, its divination indicates that it is not suitable for great affairs, but in small affairs there is still a way to attain good fortune.

Zhouyi BenyiTuan commentary

Both upper and lower take the falling-rising tone, the same below.

Explaining the meaning of the Gua's name by its images. Yuè is pronounced yuè.

Explaining the hexagram statement through the Gua's virtues, Gua changes, and Gua structure. Exhaustively stating its principle and praising it.

The two trigrams combine into one body, yet their natures are contrary.

Yichuan YizhuanGreat Image

Opposition. The Sequence of the Guas says: 'When the Dao of the family comes to an end, estrangement surely follows; hence it is received with Opposition. Opposition means estrangement.'

When the Dao of the family exhausts itself, estrangement and dispersal follow as an inevitable principle; therefore, The Family is followed by Opposition. As a Gua, Li (Fire) is above and Dui (Lake) is below; Li's fire blazes upward, while Dui's lake moistens downward.

The two bodies oppose each other, which is the meaning of Opposition. Furthermore, although the middle and younger daughters dwell together, their eventual homes are different, meaning their wills do not travel the same path; this also conveys the meaning of Opposition.

Opposition. In small affairs, good fortune. Opposition is a time of estrangement, alienation, and dispersal; it is not in itself a way of good fortune.

Yet due to the excellence of the Gua's talents, even while dwelling in a time of Opposition, there is good fortune in small affairs. The Tuan Commentary says: In Opposition, fire moves upward, and the lake moves downward.

Two women dwell together, yet their wills do not move in the same direction. The Tuan first explains the meaning of Opposition, next describes the talents of the Gua, and finally speaks of the Dao of uniting opposition, praising the greatness of its timely application.

The nature of fire moves upward, while the nature of the lake moves downward; the natures of the two things diverge, which constitutes the meaning of Opposition.

Although the middle and younger daughters dwell together, their wills do not move together, which also means Opposition. In their youth, daughters dwell together, but when grown, each departs to her marital home, and their paths diverge.

Speaking of Opposition implies that they were originally the same; if they were not originally the same, there would be no Opposition.

Joyous and adhering to luminosity; the yielding advances and moves upward, attains the Central Position and responds to the firm; hence, in small affairs, good fortune. Such are the talents of the Gua, which is why there is good fortune in small affairs.

Dui is joyous; Li is adhering, and also luminosity; hence it is joyous, compliant, and attached to luminosity.

Whenever Li is above and the Tuan Commentary intends to show the yielding occupying the honored position, it says: 'the yielding advances and moves upward,' as seen in Jin (Progress) and The Cauldron.

At the time of Opposition, Six in the Fifth Place occupies the honored seat with a yielding nature, possessing the excellence of joyful compliance adhering to clarity, and moreover attains the Central Dao while resonating with the firm.

Although unable to unite the estrangements of all under Heaven or accomplish great endeavors, it can still achieve small remedies; thus in small affairs, there is good fortune. Why can Five, despite being clear and responding to the firm, not achieve great good fortune?

The answer is: Five is yin and yielding; though it resonates with Two, during a time of Opposition, the bond of mutual association cannot yet be deep and solid. Thus, Two must 'meet his lord in an alley', and Five must 'bite through tender flesh' before becoming blameless.

In a time when all under Heaven is divided and estranged, ruler and minister must possess firm, yang, central correctness and utmost sincerity, cooperating with unified strength before unity can be forged. Heaven and Earth are opposed, yet their work is identical.

Man and woman are opposed, yet their wills are attuned. The myriad things are opposed, yet their affairs fall into kindred kinds. Great indeed is the timely application of Opposition!

Extending the underlying commonality of things to illuminate the timely application of Opposition is the sage's way of uniting estrangements. To see the same as the same is the knowledge of the common multitude.

The sage, however, illuminates the fundamental unity in the nature of things, and is thus able to harmonize the world and unite the myriad kinds.

Taking Heaven and Earth, man and woman, and the myriad things as illustrations: Heaven is high and Earth is low—their physical forms are opposed; yet yang descends and yin ascends, joining together to accomplish the work of generation and nurture, which is identical.

Man and woman have different constitutions—they are opposed; yet the desire to seek each other out is attuned.

Living creatures are manifold and diverse—they are opposed; yet all receive the harmony of Heaven and Earth and are endowed with the qi of yin and yang, which makes them kindred. Though things differ, their underlying principle is originally the same.

Therefore, though the world is vast and the multitude of living beings estranged into ten thousand varieties, the sage is able to unite them. Dwelling in a time of Opposition, the application of reconciling estrangements is exceedingly great; hence it is said, 'Great indeed!'

Fire above and Lake below: the natures of the two things diverge, which is the image of Opposition and estrangement. The noble person observes the image of Opposition and divergence, and amidst the great commonality, knows where one ought to differ.

When sages and worthies dwell in the world, in the constant norms of human relationships, they mostly conform to the general ways; but regarding what the vulgar multitude conforms to, there are times when they remain uniquely different.

In abiding by the constant moral law, they are the same; but regarding the errors of worldly customs, they are different.

One who cannot be the same as Heaven is a person who disrupts constants and violates principles; one who cannot remain uniquely different is a person who follows the herd and indulges in wrongs. The key lies in being able to differ while remaining in harmony.

As the Doctrine of the Mean says: 'He is harmonious and does not drift with the current'—this is the very point.

Zhouyi ZhuTuan commentary

When all affairs oppose each other, it is the path of harm. How then can there be good fortune in small affairs? Because it possesses these three virtues. A time of Opposition and estrangement is not something petty individuals can employ.

Zhouyi ZhuGreat Image

They are identical in universal principle, yet different in specific functions.

Zhouyi ZhengyiJudgment

The Correct Meaning states: 'Kuí' is the designation for divergence and opposition. When human sentiments are estranged, great undertakings are impossible. Great undertakings refer to levying labor and mobilizing the multitude, which can only be done in an age of great harmony.

Small affairs refer to food, drink, and clothing, which do not depend on the multitude's strength; though there is divergence, these may still proceed. Hence it is said, 'In small affairs, good fortune.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiTuan commentary

'The Tuan Commentary says: In Opposition, fire moves upward...' down to 'In small affairs, good fortune.'

The Correct Meaning states: 'In Opposition, fire moves upward, and the lake moves downward; two women dwell together, yet their wills do not move in the same direction'—this interprets the name of the Gua as 'Opposition' based on the two trigrams: they share a dwelling yet differ.

Water and fire are two things that together accomplish cooking; in principle they ought to assist each other. Now fire is above and blazes upward, while the lake rests below and moistens downward, lacking the way of mutual completion, which creates divergence.

The middle and younger daughters live in one family and by principle should share the same will, yet each departs for marriage, their wills moving in different directions, which creates difference.

'Joyous and adhering to luminosity; the yielding advances and moves upward, attains the Central Position and responds to the firm; hence, in small affairs, good fortune'—this explains why small affairs obtain good fortune based on the two trigrams and Six in the Fifth Place having a resonance.

'Joyous and adhering to luminosity' means not falling into depravity. 'The yielding advances and moves upward' means its destination is honored. 'Attains the Central Position and responds to the firm' means it is not utterly weak.

Although in a time of estrangement and divergence, the lines and Gua possess these three virtues; hence one may carry out small affairs and obtain good fortune. 'Heaven and Earth are opposed, yet their work is identical...'

down to 'Great indeed is the timely application of Opposition!'

The Correct Meaning states: 'Heaven and Earth are opposed, yet their work is identical' and what follows broadly illustrates the meaning of Opposition through Heaven and Earth, man and woman, and the myriad things: their substances diverge, yet their functions unite.

Heaven is high and Earth is low; their physical forms are far apart—this is 'Heaven and Earth are opposed'. Yet in generating and completing the categories of things, their work is identical.

'Man and woman are opposed, yet their wills are attuned': the man is outside and the woman inside, their stations are distinct—this is man and woman opposed. Yet in establishing a family and managing affairs, their wills are attuned.

The myriad things have diverse forms, each presenting its own shape—this is 'the myriad things are opposed'. Yet all are alike in growing and flourishing; their work is kindred. Hence it is said: 'Heaven and Earth are opposed, yet their work is identical.

Man and woman are opposed, yet their wills are attuned. The myriad things are opposed, yet their affairs fall into kindred kinds. Great indeed is the timely application of Opposition!'

Having clarified the greatness of harmonizing opposition, it further marvels that one capable of utilizing Opposition must possess no small virtue; during a time of estrangement, to establish its function and unite it with universal principle can only be done by a person of great virtue.

Hence it is said, 'Great indeed is the timely application of Opposition!'

Zhouyi ZhengyiGreat Image

The Correct Meaning states: 'Above is fire, below is the lake: Opposition'—they move in opposite directions, which is why it is 'Opposition'.

'The noble person, in accordance with this, unites yet differentiates'—in assisting the sovereign and governing the people, their intent is the same; yet each office has its specific charges, and their duties are distinct.

Hence it is said, 'The noble person, in accordance with this, unites yet differentiates.'
