Judgment

In Thâi (we see) the little gone and the great come. (It indicates that) there will be good fortune, with progress and success.

Tuan commentary

‘The little come and the great gone in Thâi, and its indication that there will be good fortune with progress and success’ show to us heaven and earth in communication with each other, and all things in consequence having free course, and (also) the high and the low, (superiors and inferiors), in communication with one another, and possessed by the same aim.

The inner (trigram) is made up of the strong and undivided lines, and the outer of the weak and divided; the inner is (the symbol of) strength, and the outer of docility; the inner (represents) the superior man, and the outer the small man.

(Thus) the way of the superior man appears increasing, and that of the small man decreasing.

Great Image

(The trigrams for) heaven and earth in communication together form Thâi.

The (sage) sovereign, in harmony with this, fashions and completes (his regulations) after the courses of heaven and earth, and assists the application of the adaptations furnished by them,—in order to benefit the people.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiJudgment

Tai means pervading and smooth. As a hexagram, Heaven and Earth interact and the two qi interpenetrate; hence it is Hexagram 11, Peace (Tài). It is the hexagram of the first lunar month. "The small" refers to yin; "the great" refers to yang.

It says that Kun (Earth) departs to dwell outside, while Qian (Heaven) arrives to dwell within. Furthermore, coming from Hexagram 54, The Marrying Maiden, six departs to occupy line four, while nine arrives to occupy line three.

If the diviner possesses the virtue of yang firmness, it will be auspicious and prosperous.

Zhouyi BenyiTuan commentary

Zhǎng (to wax): fanqie reading d-ing + zh-ang; the same applies to Hexagram 12, Standstill (Stagnation) (Pǐ).

Zhouyi BenyiGreat Image

Cái (fashion) is equivalent to cái (cut/tailor). Xiàng (aid): fanqie reading x-i + l-iang. Zuǒ (support): pronounced zuǒ; yòu (assist): pronounced yòu. "Fashioning and completing" means curbing excess; "assisting and aiding" means making up for deficiencies.

Yichuan YizhuanJudgment

Peace in the Sequence of Hexagrams: Treading brings peace, and only then is there security; hence it is received by Peace. When conduct attains its proper place, there is ease and peace; when there is peace, there is security. This is why Peace follows Treading.

As a hexagram, Kun-yin is above and Qian-yang is below; the qi of Heaven and Earth, yin and yang, interact and harmonize, so the myriad things are generated and completed; hence it is smooth Peace. "The small" refers to yin; "the great" refers to yang.

"Departing" means going outside; "arriving" means coming to dwell within. Yang qi descends, while yin qi ascends to meet it. When yin and yang harmonize and flow freely, the myriad things thrive and grow: this is the peace of Heaven and Earth.

In terms of human affairs, the great represents the ruler above, and the small represents the ministers below.

The ruler extends sincerity to entrust the subordinates, and the ministers exhaust sincerity to serve the ruler; the wills of above and below interpenetrate: this is the peace of the court. Yang represents the noble person, and yin represents the petty person.

The noble person arrives to dwell within, and the petty person departs to dwell without: the noble person attains office, while the petty person remains below: this is the peace of all under heaven. The way of Peace is both auspicious and prosperous.

That it does not say "supreme good fortune and supreme prosperity" is because times have waxing and waning, and governance has broad and narrow scopes; though it is peace, how could it be uniform? Saying "auspicious and prosperous" encompasses it all.

Yichuan YizhuanTuan commentary

"The small departs, the great arrives": yin departs and yang arrives. This means the qi of Heaven and Earth, yin and yang, interact, and the myriad things attain smooth peace. In humanity, the feelings of above and below communicate, and their wills and thoughts are united.

Yang arrives to dwell within, and yin departs to dwell without: yang advances and yin retreats. The strength of The Creative is within, and the compliance of The Receptive is without; being strong within and compliant without is the way of the noble person.

When the noble person is within and the petty person is without, the way of the noble person waxes and the way of the petty person wanes; this is why it is Peace.

It takes both the harmonious interaction of yin and yang, and the waxing of the noble person's way; the harmonious interaction of yin and yang is precisely how the noble person's way waxes.

Yichuan YizhuanGreat Image

When Heaven and Earth interact and yin and yang harmonize, the myriad things flourish and thrive; this is how Peace is realized.

The ruler should embody the image of the universal peace of Heaven and Earth, fashioning and completing the way of Heaven and Earth, and aiding the fitting order of Heaven and Earth, so as to support and assist the living people.

"Fashioning and completing" means embodying the way of Heaven and Earth's interacting peace, tailoring and establishing methods for execution.

"Aiding the fitting order of Heaven and Earth": when Heaven and Earth enjoy peace, the myriad things flourish; the ruler embodies this to create laws and institutions, enabling the people to utilize heaven's seasons and rely on earth's advantages, assisting the transforming and nurturing work of nature to accomplish rich and abundant benefits.

For example, when spring qi generates the myriad things, he establishes rules for sowing and planting; when autumn qi brings the myriad things to fruition, he establishes rules for harvesting. This is aiding the fitting order of Heaven and Earth to support and assist the people.

The livelihood of the people must depend on the ruler establishing laws and regulations to instruct, guide, and support them, so that their rearing and sustenance may be fulfilled; this is supporting and assisting them.

Zhouyi ZhuGreat Image

Peace is the time when things enjoy great interpenetration. When above and below interpenetrate greatly, things lose their restraint; therefore he fashions, completes, assists, and aids, so as to support the people.

Zhouyi ZhengyiJudgment

The Zhengyi commentary says: Yin departs, hence "the small departs"; yang waxes, hence "the great arrives"; through this, it is auspicious and prosperous.

That this hexagram reaches the extreme of prosperity yet lacks the full four virtues is because when things interpenetrate excessively, they often lose their moderation; thus it cannot be considered primal beginning with favorable perseverance.

This is why the Xiang commentary speaks of "fashioning and completing" and "assisting and aiding"; hence the four virtues are not complete.

Zhouyi ZhengyiTuan commentary

From "The Tuan says: Peace: The small departs, the great arrives; good fortune and prosperity" to "the way of the petty person wanes."

The Zhengyi commentary says: "Peace: The small departs, the great arrives; good fortune and prosperity; this means Heaven and Earth interact and the myriad things interpenetrate": this explains why this hexagram, with "the small departs, the great arrives; good fortune and prosperity," is named Peace (Tài).

The reason it receives the name Peace is solely that the qi of Heaven and Earth interact to generate and nurture the myriad things, allowing things to achieve great interpenetration; hence it says "Peace."

"Above and below interact and their wills are united": this uses human affairs to mirror the interaction of Heaven and Earth. "Above" refers to the ruler; "below" refers to the ministers. Ruler and ministers are in harmony, so their wills and thoughts are united.

"Yang is within and yin is without; strong within and compliant without": being strong within corresponds to yang within; being compliant without corresponds to yin without.

"Yang within and yin without" refers to the images; "strong within and compliant without" clarifies their natures; this explains the virtue of the hexagram Peace. Yin and yang speak of the lines; strength and compliance speak of the trigrams.

This explains "the small departs, the great arrives; good fortune and prosperity" through the hexagram and lines.

"The noble person is within and the petty person is without; the way of the noble person waxes, and the way of the petty person wanes": this further explains "the small departs, the great arrives; good fortune and prosperity" in terms of human affairs.

Zhouyi ZhengyiGreat Image

From "The Xiang says: Heaven and Earth interact: Peace" to "to support the people." The Zhengyi commentary says: "The sovereign fashions and completes the way of Heaven and Earth": because all things interpenetrate in peace, above and below may lose moderation.

"Sovereign" (hòu) means the ruler. At this time, the ruler should trim and tailor, bringing the way of Heaven and Earth to completion. "Aids the fitting order of Heaven and Earth": "xiàng" means to assist; he should assist the fitting provisions generated by Heaven and Earth.

"To support the people": "zuǒyòu" means to assist and support, helping to nurture his people. "The way of Heaven and Earth" refers to the four seasons: the principles of winter cold, summer heat, spring generation, and autumn killing.

If their qi simply blends without measure, things lose their moderation. If things lose their moderation, there would be winter warmth, summer chill, autumn growth, and spring killing.

The ruler must tailor, moderate, and bring to completion, keeping cold and heat in their normal cycles, and growth and harvesting in their proper seasons; these are the natural qi of Heaven and Earth, hence called "the way of Heaven and Earth."

"The fitting order of Heaven and Earth" means that the things generated by Heaven and Earth each have what is fitting for them.

As the Minister of Education says, "its animals and plants," and the Official of Geography notes that Yangzhou's fitting tribute is rice and wheat, while Yongzhou's fitting tribute is millet and sorghum.

If heavenly qi were completely undifferentiated, these fitting provisions would be reversed.

Therefore, the ruler assists the fitting things of Heaven and Earth so each rests securely in its nature and finds its suitability; speaking in terms of things, it is called "fitting order" (yí).

This hexagram uses "sovereign" (hòu) because it does not include dukes, ministers, and grandees, so it does not say "noble person."

Yet it encompasses feudal lords, so it cannot simply say "ancient kings"; intending to show that both the Son of Heaven and the feudal lords are south-facing rulers, it specifically says "sovereign."
