I Ching casting

Holding the base position of the inner Heaven trigram, the first yang lacks a direct relationship with the fourth line, keeping it naturally detached from high-level power struggles.

Classical commentaries emphasize that freedom from harmful entanglements at this opening stage is a gift of self-containment, mirrored in the transformation into Hexagram 50, Ting.

Remaining vigilant and mindful of potential pitfalls preserves inner strength before major demands arrive. In short, keeping clear of complicated entanglements at the outset ensures lasting safety.

Career

Stepping into a resource-rich environment or a well-funded organization calls for steady craftsmanship rather than immediate networking or political climbing. Staying focused on fundamental duties shields you from the factional frictions that often accompany abundant resources.

Developing your technical foundations quietly prevents costly reputational baggage. Put plainly, keep your head down and hone your skills so you stay protected from workplace politics.

Love & relationships

In personal relationships, this line reflects a clean slate free from financial entanglements, heavy obligations, or mutual calculation. Traditional wisdom suggests preserving this simplicity instead of prematurely weighing down the connection with material expectations.

By staying genuine and unpretentious, you allow mutual affection to flourish without pressure. In simple terms, keep the relationship light and sincere without letting outside interests complicate it.

Wealth

Surrounded by enticing opportunities, the structural guidance here advises avoiding shared speculative ventures or convoluted debt obligations. Maintaining distinct personal boundaries and practicing strict budget discipline prevents disputes over shared resources.

A prudent, conservative stance guards your capital effectively while the environment swells around you. The takeaway is to keep your finances separate and straightforward rather than getting swept into messy partnerships.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Although it is the time of Possession in Great Measure, being a yang line dwelling below with no ties or correspondence above, and standing at the beginning of affairs, it has not yet incurred harm. What blame could there be?

Yet one must abide in difficulty and hardship to remain free of blame; the diviner should be admonished to act accordingly.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Nine dwells at the beginning of Possession in Great Measure, not yet having reached fullness; occupying a lowly place without correspondence, it has not committed the error of pride and arrogance, hence there is no reciprocal harm, nor has it encountered harm.

Generally, when wealth and abundance abound, few escape harm; even with the virtue of Zigong, he could barely avoid it entirely—how much less those inferior to him?

'It is not a fault; through hardship there is no blame' means that wealth and abundance are not inherently blameworthy; people simply bring blame upon themselves because of wealth and abundance.

If one can enjoy wealth and abundance while knowing how difficult it is to preserve them, one will naturally remain without blame.

Dwelling in wealth and abundance without contemplating difficulties, lacking vigilance and awe, feelings of arrogance and extravagance will arise, which is how blame comes about.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

At the beginning of Possession in Great Measure, being able to keep hardship in mind prevents any pride or excess from arising; this is why one does not encounter harm.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Taking firm strength as the beginning of Possession in Great Measure, unable to practice centrality, full yet unable to keep from overflowing—if one proceeds with such an approach, later harm is bound to arrive.

If one desires to be without blame, 'through hardship there is no blame.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

'Nine at the Beginning... through hardship there is no blame.'

The Sub-commentary says: Taking firm strength as the beginning of Possession in Great Measure, unable to practice centrality and humble retreat, though there is currently no reciprocal harm, prolonged action will surely bring misfortune.

If one desires 'it is not a fault,' being able to make one's will endure hardship will yield 'no blame'; hence it is said: 'No reciprocal harm; it is not a fault; through hardship there is no blame.' Regarding the note 'unable to practice centrality...

there is no blame': The Sub-commentary says: 'Unable to practice centrality, full yet unable to keep from overflowing': the initial line is not in the second position, which means it cannot practice centrality.

Standing at the beginning of Possession in Great Measure signifies fullness; conducting oneself with firm strength signifies overflowing; hence it says 'unable to practice centrality, full yet unable to keep from overflowing.'
