31. Influence (Wooing) (咸)

Line 3

If this line changes it transforms into 45. Gathering Together (萃)

Modern reading

Nine in the third place illustrates resonance located in the thighs, representing impulsive movements driven by following others rather than one's own center. Classical readings warn that yielding personal autonomy to blindly trail behind another leads to humiliation and awkward stalls.

I Ching casting

Holding a yang line at the transition between trigrams, this position indicates restless energy that abandons its natural stillness to pursue external influences.

The Xiaoxiang commentary observes that fixing one's intent on following others compromises one's footing and lowers personal standards. In simple terms, chasing someone else's agenda leaves you stranded without direction of your own.

Career

In workplace dynamics, there is a risk of becoming overly reactive to every shifting demand or leaning entirely on another person's authority.

Subordinating professional judgment to follow trends or dominant personalities often leads to taking the blame for misdirected initiatives. In simple terms, hold your ground and trust your own expertise instead of letting others steer your course.

Love & relationships

In personal relationships, bending entirely to accommodate a partner's every whim erodes personal boundaries and mutual respect. Classical interpretations note that when one person loses their independent identity in pursuit of approval, healthy reciprocity collapses.

In simple terms, maintaining your own identity is the only way to build an equal and lasting partnership.

Wealth

Financial decisions are currently vulnerable to herd mentality and hasty moves prompted by market chatter or unsolicited tips. The transition toward Hexagram 45 highlights gathering resources, yet doing so without an independent strategy invites disorganized exposure.

In simple terms, tune out the crowd and avoid jumping into commitments before doing your own careful vetting.

Line statement

3. The third line, undivided, shows one moving his thighs, and keeping close hold of those whom he follows. Going forward (in this way) will cause regret.

Small Image

‘He moves his thighs:’—he still does not (want to) rest in his place. His will is set on ‘following others:’—what he holds in his grasp is low.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

The thighs follow the feet in movement and cannot act on their own initiative. 'Holding' carries the meaning of taking charge and holding steadfastly.

The lower two lines both wish to move, and the third line likewise cannot hold fast on its own, following them instead; to go forward thus brings distress. Hence the image and divination are such.

Zhouyi BenyiSmall Image

The word 'likewise' is used because the preceding two lines both wish to move.

The two lower lines are yin and restless, so their movement is natural to them; but Nine in the Third Place is yang and firm, situated at the culmination of keeping still, where it ought to remain quiet, yet it moves—this is deeply to be regretted.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Nine in the Third Place is yang occupying a firm position, possessing the talent of firm yang and acting as master within. Occupying the top of the lower realm, it ought to attain the correct way within itself so as to influence things; yet it responds to Six at the Top.

Yang likes to ascend and takes pleasure in yin, while the top line occupies the utmost limit of influence and joy; therefore the third line is moved to follow it.

The thigh is situated below the trunk and above the foot, unable to act independently and moving only in following the body; hence it is taken as an image.

This means Nine in the Third Place cannot master itself and moves following external things, just like a thigh; what it holds to merely follows external things.

For a talent of firm yang to be swayed by what pleases it and follow along—to proceed in this manner is truly disgraceful and distressing.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

The word 'likewise' is used because the text of the Commentary on the Images was originally not interspersed with the Zhouyi text but stood as a continuous whole, so the meanings of the Images across lines are often consecutive.

Here, 'likewise' carries forward the text of the preceding line. Above it said: 'Influence in the great toes: the will is directed outward'; and 'Although there is misfortune, dwelling brings good fortune, for compliance brings no harm.'

Here it says: 'Influence in the thighs; likewise cannot remain still.' The preceding two yin lines both move upon being influenced; although the third is a yang line, it does the same, hence it is said that it 'likewise cannot remain still.' Not remaining still means moving.

Possessing the quality of firm yang yet unable to master oneself, with one's will conversely bent on following others—this shows that what one holds to is base in the extreme.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

The thigh is something that follows the foot. In advancing it cannot check movement; in retreating it cannot dwell in quiet. Its influence is in the thighs, meaning 'its will is directed toward following others.'

When the will is directed toward following others, what it holds to is also base. To proceed by using this brings distress, as is appropriate.

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

Correct meaning: 'Influence in the thighs; likewise cannot remain still' means not only can it not check movement when advancing, but it also cannot remain quiet when retreating.

'What it holds to is base' means that since its will is bent on following others, the intention it holds fast to is lowly and base.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Nine in the Third Place, the third line, lowest-low: Speak no more of matters true or false; within them lie many advances and retreats. The laurel moon waxes full then wanes again; its bright luster must be polished anew.
