‘The second NINE, (undivided), shows that with firm correctness there will be good fortune:’—this is due to its being in the centre, (and its subject exemplifying the due mean).

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Occupying a Yin place with a Yang line, it has already lost its correctness. Yet because it attains the Central Position in its dwelling, it can still avoid losing correctness thereby.

Hence the diviner is warned to seek correctness by means of centrality, after which good fortune can be obtained.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Although the second line is firm Yang during the time of Great Strength, it dwells in yielding and holds the center. This means firmness and yielding attain the mean, not exceeding in strength, thereby securing perseverance, correctness, and good fortune.

Someone might ask: Does 'perseverance' not serve as a warning because Nine occupies the second place? I reply: The Changes takes what is predominant as its guiding meaning.

When a firm, strong, and healthy body encounters the time of Great Strength, yet dwells in the central Dao, nothing fails to be correct. In the fourth line there is indeed a warning against incorrectness.

If one can recognize the relative gravity of the time and meaning, one may begin to study the Changes.

The reason it attains perseverance and good fortune is that it achieves the central Dao. Keeping the center, it does not lose correctness—how much more so as a firm Yang line within the Qian body?

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling in the Central Position, it occupies a Yin place with a Yang line, treading in humility without arrogance; therefore, 'perseverance brings good fortune.'

The Correct Meaning says: Because it dwells in the center, treads in humility, and acts without violating propriety, it attains correctness and good fortune.
