5. The fifth line, divided, shows (its subject), the superior man ( = thc ruler), executing his function of removing (whatever is injurious to the idea of the hexagram), in which case there will be good fortune, and confidence in him will be shown even by the small men.

Six in the Fifth Place occupies the honored position as the master of Deliverance; this is the ruler's deliverance.

Speaking of it generally through the noble person: those whom the noble person draws close to and aligns with are inevitably noble persons, and those whom he disperses and dismisses are inevitably petty persons.

Therefore, when the noble person alone brings deliverance, it is auspicious. When petty persons depart, noble persons advance—what greater auspiciousness could there be? 'Possessing confidence' is commonly taken to mean visible proof.

It can be verified among the petty persons: when the cliques of petty persons depart, this proves that the noble person has been able to bring deliverance.

When petty persons depart, noble persons advance naturally, the correct Way prevails of itself, and the world is readily governed.
