‘The good fortune attached to the pleasure of (inward) harmony’ arises from there being nothing in the conduct (of the subject of the line) to awaken doubt.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Occupying the body of The Joyous with a yang line at the very bottom, and having no tie or correspondence, its image and divination are like this.

Zhouyi BenyiSmall Image

Residing at the beginning of the hexagram, its pleasing is correct, and there is as yet no doubt.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Though Nine at the Beginning is a yang line, it resides in the body of The Joyous at the lowest position, without any tie or correspondence; this represents one who can remain humble, harmonious, and compliant in bringing joy, free from partiality or selfishness.

Making harmony into joy without partiality is the correctness of pleasing. Being yang and firm, one is not base; residing below, one can be gentle; dwelling in joy, one can be harmonious; lacking correspondence, one is impartial.

Dwelling in joy like this is why there is good fortune.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Seeking harmony out of desire borders on depraved flattery. The beginning follows the time and rests in compliance, its mind free of attachment and ulterior purpose, simply being harmonious; thus it brings good fortune.

The Commentary on the Image, noting that it dwells in joy below without being central or correct, says 'its conduct is not yet doubted.' That its conduct has nothing doubtful means no fault is yet seen in it.

Had it attained the central and correct position, such words would not be spoken. Pleasing takes centrality and correctness as its root; the line statement directly expresses its meaning, while the Commentary on the Image extrapolates it fully.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Residing at the beginning of The Joyous, its correspondence is not singular, having neither faction nor attachment; this is called harmonious pleasing. Pleasing does not consist in flattery; walking in this way, none are seen to doubt it, so good fortune is truly fitting.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Correct Meaning states: Nine at the Beginning resides at the start of The Joyous; its correspondence is not singular, and it has no private favoritism, which is the harmony of pleasing. Pleasing things with harmony, wherever one goes, what would not be auspicious?

Hence it is said: 'Harmonious pleasing: good fortune.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

The Correct Meaning states: 'Its conduct is not yet doubted': its pleasing is not flattery; walking this path, none are seen to doubt it, which is how it attains good fortune.
