I Ching casting

Nine in the fifth position stands central and correct in the honored sovereign place, wielding the full authority required to dissolve collective stagnation.

The classical text evokes the image of fever-breaking sweat alongside the opening of royal reserves, symbolizing transparent edicts and generous distribution.

With the resulting hexagram being Meng, the Xiang commentary notes that acting from this upright station ensures operations proceed without blame. Leading with radical transparency and genuine generosity clears deep-seated grievances across the board.

Career

When team morale is burdened by persistent rumors or bureaucratic inertia, leadership cannot rely on subtle hints or passive management. Establishing clear, publicly documented policies and backing them with tangible resources restores institutional trust.

Issuing decisive, transparent directives revitalizes collective confidence and unifies the team.

Love & relationships

Long-standing misunderstandings between partners cannot be resolved through superficial pleasantries or quiet resentment. Traditional readings suggest a cathartic, wholehearted conversation that lays bare honest feelings and clears the emotional air completely.

Communicating openly and laying your true thoughts on the table allows the relationship to start afresh.

Wealth

In corporate governance and joint enterprises, withholding earnings excessively can demotivate key contributors and erode trust. The hexagram's imagery encourages active profit-sharing and clear incentive mechanisms to foster enduring collective engagement.

Sharing commercial gains equitably with essential collaborators reinforces the long-term health of the venture.

5. The fifth line, undivided, shows its subject amidst the dispersion issuing his great announcements as the perspiration (flows from his body). He scatters abroad (also) the accumulations in the royal granaries. There will be no error.

‘The accumulations of the royal (granaries) are dispersed, and there is no error:’—this is due to the correctness of the position.

Classical commentary

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Five and Four unite their virtues as ruler and minister, governing dispersion through firm centrality, correctness, and gentle compliance, thereby grasping the proper way. The key lies solely in permeating the hearts of the people so that they follow.

One must cause orders and proclamations to permeate the people's hearts just as sweat spreads across the limbs of the body; then they will trustingly submit and obey.

In this way one can rescue all under Heaven from dispersion, dwelling in the king's place worthily and free from blame. The 'great cry' refers to great governmental decrees, meaning the great commands that renew the people and the great governance that rescues from dispersion.

Mentioning 'dispersion' twice means: the upper refers to the time of dispersion; the lower means acting within dispersion like this leaves no blame. For Four, supreme good fortune has already been mentioned; for Five, it merely speaks of being worthy of its position.

That Four and Five in Huàn are discussed together is because dispersion brings harm through separation, and rescuing it requires bringing things together. Unless ruler and minister combine their merits and unite their strength, how could they succeed?

The line meanings mutually depend on each other, as fits the time.

The royal residence refers to the correct position, the honored station of the sovereign. If one can act as Five does, dwelling in the honored station is fitting and free of blame.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Occupying the honored seat and treading in correctness, dwelling in the center of Xùn, he disperses sweat through his great proclamations to clear away perils and straits. As the master of dispersion, only when the king occupies this station can there be no blame.

The correct position cannot be borrowed by others.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Correct Meaning states: 'Sweat disperses with his great cry': when a person encounters perils and straits, terrified and exhausted, sweat pours from the body; hence sweat is used as a metaphor for peril.

Nine in the Fifth Place occupies the honored station and treads in correctness, in the midst of issuing commands; he can carry out orders to disperse perils, hence 'Sweat disperses with his great cry.'

'In dispersion, the king dwells without blame': as master of dispersion, the title and position cannot be lent to others; only when the king occupies it can there be no blame, hence 'In dispersion, the king dwells without blame.'

The Correct Meaning states: 'The correct position' explains the meaning of 'the king dwells without blame.' Because Nine in the Fifth Place is the correct position of the king, if anyone other than the king occupied it, there would be blame.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Nine in the Fifth Place, line five, middle of the middle: Not returning to unity, laboring heart and strength. Beside a person of noble rank, one should borrow support.
