Judgment

Hsien indicates that, (on the fulfilment of the conditions implied in it), there will be free course and success. Its advantageousness will depend on the being firm and correct, (as) in marrying a young lady. There will be good fortune.

Tuan commentary

Hsien is here used in the sense of Kan, meaning (mutually) influencing.

The weak (trigram) above, and the strong one below; their two influences moving and responding to each other, and thereby forming a union; the repression (of the one) and the satisfaction (of the other); (with their relative position), where the male is placed below the female:—all these things convey the notion of ‘a free and successful course (on the fulfilment of the conditions), while the advantage will depend on being firm and correct, as in marrying a young lady, and there will be good fortune.’

Heaven and earth exert their influences, and there ensue the transformation and production of all things. The sages influence the minds of men, and the result is harmony and peace all under the sky.

If we look at (the method and issues) of those influences, the true character of heaven and earth and of all things can be seen.

Great Image

(The trigram representing) a mountain and above it that for (the waters of) a marsh form Hsien. The superior man, in accordance with this, keeps his mind free from pre-occupation, and open to receive (the influences of) others.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiJudgment

Qu (to take/marry) is pronounced with qi and ju. Xian means mutual influence/stimulation. The Joyous (Lake), yielding, is above; Keeping Still (Mountain), firm, is below, stimulating and responding to each other.

Furthermore, Keeping Still's stopping makes stimulation focused, while The Joyous's joyousness makes response thorough.

Moreover, Keeping Still as the youngest son places himself below The Joyous as the youngest daughter—the male placing himself below the female attains the correctness of man and woman and the proper time for marriage.

Hence the hexagram is Influence (Wooing); its divination is success and perseverance is beneficial; taking a maiden brings good fortune.

Influence inherently contains the principle of inevitable breakthrough; yet if not based on perseverance, one loses its success and whatever is done brings misfortune. Explains the name and meaning of the hexagram.

Zhouyi BenyiTuan commentary

Yue (joy) is pronounced like yue. 'Nan xia zhi xia' (the male placing himself below): xia is pronounced with xia and jia. Explains the hexagram statement through hexagram structure, hexagram virtue, and hexagram images.

Some also explain the meaning of the yielding ascending and the firm descending through hexagram change, saying: Influence comes from The Wanderer, with the yielding ascending to occupy the sixth line and the firm descending to occupy the fifth line; this also holds true.

Speaks to the utmost principle of resonance and breakthrough.

Zhouyi BenyiGreat Image

Above the mountain is a lake: through emptiness it allows resonance.

Yichuan YizhuanJudgment

The Sequence of the Hexagrams states: 'Only after there are Heaven and Earth are there the ten thousand things; only after there are the ten thousand things are there male and female; only after there are male and female are there husband and wife; only after there are husband and wife are there father and son; only after there are father and son are there ruler and minister; only after there are ruler and minister are there superior and inferior; only after there are superior and inferior do ritual and righteousness have a place to be established.'

Heaven and Earth are the root of the ten thousand things; husband and wife are the origin of human relations. Therefore, the Upper Classic begins with The Creative (Heaven) and The Receptive (Earth), while the Lower Classic begins with Influence (Wooing), followed by Duration.

Heaven and Earth are two entities, so the two hexagrams are divided into the Dao of Heaven and Earth. Male and female unite to become husband and wife, so Influence and Duration both combine two trigrams to form the meaning of husband and wife.

Influence means stimulation, taking joyousness as primary; Duration means constancy, taking correctness as the foundation. In the way of joyousness there is naturally correctness; in the way of correctness there is naturally joy.

Being gentle and moving, with firm and yielding both responding, is joyous. In Influence as a hexagram, The Joyous (Lake) is above and Keeping Still (Mountain) is below, representing the youngest daughter and youngest son.

In mutual stimulation between male and female, none is deeper than when both are young; hence the two young ones form Influence. The body of Keeping Still is solid and sincere; stopping conveys the meaning of heartfelt sincerity.

The young man's will is sincere, humbling himself to interact below; the maiden's heart is joyous, responding above. The male is the first to stimulate: the male first stimulates with sincerity, then the female rejoices and responds.

Influence means stimulation; not calling it gan (stimulation) is because xian carries the meaning of 'all'—male and female mutually stimulate each other. In mutual stimulation of things, none compares to male and female, and young ones are even more intense.

In general, ruler and minister, superior and inferior, down to all things, all share the way of mutual stimulation. When things stimulate one another, there is the principle of success and breakthrough.

If ruler and minister can stimulate each other, the way of ruler and minister flows freely; if superiors and inferiors can stimulate each other, their intentions connect; down to father and son, husband and wife, relatives and friends, when sentiments and intentions resonate mutually, there is harmony, compliance, and success.

All affairs and things are like this; hence Influence contains the principle of success. 'Perseverance is beneficial': the way of mutual influence finds its benefit in correctness; if not correct, it falls into evil.

Like husband and wife uniting through wanton lust, ruler and minister pleasing through flattery, superiors and inferiors engaging in depravity—these are all cases where mutual stimulation is not correct.

'Taking a maiden brings good fortune' is spoken in terms of the hexagram's capacity. The hexagram has the yielding ascending and the firm descending, two qi stimulating and responding to each other, stopping and rejoicing, the male humbling himself before the female.

Taking a maiden with this meaning attains correctness and good fortune. The Tuan Commentary says: Influence means mutual stimulation.

Yichuan YizhuanTuan commentary

'Joyousness, and the male humbling himself before the female; hence success, perseverance is beneficial, and taking a maiden brings good fortune.' The meaning of Influence is stimulation.

In the hexagram, the yielding lines ascend and the firm lines descend: the yielding ascending alters the firm to become The Joyous (Lake); the firm descending alters the yielding to become Keeping Still (Mountain).

Yin and yang intermingle, conveying the meaning of male and female mutually stimulating each other. Furthermore, The Joyous the maiden is above and Keeping Still the young man is below, which is also the yielding above and the firm below.

The two qi of yin and yang stimulate and respond to each other and harmonize in concord, which is mutual giving.

Stopping and joyous: stopping in joyousness conveys the sense of steadfast sincerity; Keeping Still stops below, humbling itself in profound sincerity; The Joyous is above, responding in joyous harmony. With the male humbling himself before the female, harmony reaches its peak.

The way of mutual influence being like this, it can achieve success and attain correctness; taking a maiden in this way brings good fortune. The hexagram's capacity is such; in general, the way of influence benefits from correctness.

'Heaven and Earth stimulate each other, and the ten thousand things are transformed and born. The sage stimulates human hearts, and the world is peaceful and harmonious. Observing what they stimulate, the dispositions of Heaven, Earth, and the ten thousand things can be seen.'

Having spoken of the meaning of mutual influence between male and female, it further extends the way of influence to the utmost, exhausting the principle of Heaven and Earth and the application of sages.

Heaven and Earth's two qi mutually stimulate each other to transform and give birth to the ten thousand things; the sage uses utmost sincerity to stimulate the hearts of the millions, so that the world is peaceful and harmonious.

The reason the hearts of the world are peaceful and harmonious is that the sage stimulates them.

Observing the principle of Heaven and Earth mutually stimulating to transform and generate all things, and the sage's way of stimulating human hearts to bring peace, the true dispositions of Heaven, Earth, and all things can be seen.

The principle of resonance and breakthrough—those who understand the Dao may silently contemplate it. The Xiang Commentary says: 'A lake on the mountain: Influence. The noble man receives people with emptiness.'

The nature of a lake is to moisten downward; the nature of earth is to receive moisture. The lake being on top of the mountain, its soaking moisture penetrates through; this is the qi of the two things resonating and communicating.

The noble man observes the image of mountain and lake communicating qi, and empties his center to receive people. When a person's center is empty, he can receive; when full, nothing can enter.

An empty center means selflessness; when the center has no private master, no stimulation fails to resonate.

If one tolerates according to measure or receives only by choosing what suits oneself, that is not the sage's way of responding to every stimulation with complete breakthrough.

Zhouyi ZhuTuan commentary

Hence there is success. Therefore 'perseverance is beneficial.' 'Taking a maiden brings good fortune.' The two qi interact, and then 'transform and generate.' The dispositions of Heaven, Earth, and the ten thousand things are seen in what they stimulate.

In general, as the way of influence, one cannot stimulate what is not of one's kind; hence it adduces taking a maiden to clarify the principle of being of the same kind.

If beings of the same kind do not stimulate and respond to each other, it is because each stands haughtily in its own position; therefore, although the female is that which corresponds to the male, only when he humbles himself before her does taking a maiden bring good fortune.

Zhouyi ZhuGreat Image

Receiving people with emptiness, all things then resonate and respond.

Zhouyi ZhengyiJudgment

From 'Influence: success, perseverance is beneficial' to 'taking a maiden brings good fortune.'

Correct Meaning: Earlier scholars noted that according to the ancient division of the Changes, the thirty hexagrams from here upward form the Upper Classic, and the thirty-four hexagrams from here downward form the Lower Classic; the Sequence of the Hexagrams begins afresh here.

Earlier scholars all held that the Upper Classic illuminates the Dao of Heaven, while the Lower Classic illuminates human affairs.

However, Han Kangbo's commentary on the Sequence of the Hexagrams refuted this view: 'In the Changes, six strokes form a hexagram, containing the Three Powers; weaving together Heaven and humankind to emulate changes, how could Heaven's Dao and human affairs be biased toward the upper or lower parts?'

Note: In the Upper Classic, it explains that food and drink inevitably lead to contention, and contention inevitably leads to masses gathering; this already combines human affairs and is not exclusively Heaven's Dao.

Since it is not exclusively Heaven's Dao, the Lower Classic is likewise not exclusively human affairs; principle is naturally so. However, Confucius's Sequence of the Hexagrams does not attach Influence to The Clinging (Fire).

The Xici says 'the stalks of the two sections,' indicating that the sixty-four hexagrams were originally divided into upper and lower parts: The Creative (Heaven) and The Receptive (Earth) image Heaven and Earth, while Influence (Wooing) and Duration illuminate husband and wife.

The Creative and The Receptive are the root of creation, and husband and wife are the origin of human relations; modeling after them, why shouldn't it be so?

As for why Heaven and Earth have separate hexagrams while husband and wife share hexagrams, Master Zhou said: 'Honoring the Dao of Heaven and Earth, human affairs are treated concisely; just as in the Three Powers, Heaven and Earth count as two, while humanity is only one.'

This is surely not so. I humbly propose: The Creative and The Receptive illuminate the initial opening of Heaven and Earth, and only at Difficulty at the Beginning do the firm and yielding first intermingle.

Thus pure yang images Heaven and pure yin images Earth, while Influence illuminates human affairs. Once living beings are born, they mutually stimulate each other.

If the two qi do not intermingle, mutual stimulation cannot occur; naturally Heaven and Earth are each one, while husband and wife share a hexagram. This is clear without words; why invent bizarre theories?

'Influence: success, perseverance is beneficial; taking a maiden brings good fortune': xian means stimulation.

This hexagram illuminates the beginning of human relations and the duty of husband and wife: male and female must mutually stimulate and respond before becoming husband and wife. Once they stimulate and respond, breakthrough is achieved.

If they connect through depraved ways, calamity and harm will ensue; hence benefit lies in correctness. Stimulating and connecting with correctness is the goodness of marriage; hence 'Influence: success, perseverance is beneficial; taking a maiden brings good fortune.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiTuan commentary

Correct Meaning: 'The yielding ascends and the firm descends; the two qi stimulate and respond to interact' explains the meaning of 'Influence brings success' through the upper and lower trigrams.

Keeping Still (Mountain) is firm and The Joyous (Lake) is yielding; if firm were above and yielding below, they would not intermingle and stimulate, leaving no way for breakthrough.

Now The Joyous yielding is above and Keeping Still firm is below, meaning the two qi stimulate and respond to give to each other; hence 'Influence brings success.' Correct Meaning: This explains 'perseverance is beneficial' through the meaning of the two trigrams.

Keeping Still stops and The Joyous is joyous. Being able to remain quiet and still means not following restless desires; acting joyously above prevents depraved flattery. Not losing correctness is why 'perseverance is beneficial.'

Correct Meaning: This explains the meaning of 'taking a maiden brings good fortune' through the images of the two trigrams.

Keeping Still is the youngest son dwelling below, and The Joyous is the youngest daughter dwelling above; this is the male humbling himself before the female.

In the rite of marriage, the male first seeks the female; in the welcoming rite, turning the wheels three times, the male always humbles himself before the female first, after which the female responds to the male; this is why taking a maiden brings good fortune.

From 'Hence' to 'transform and generate.' Correct Meaning: ''Hence success, perseverance is beneficial, and taking a maiden brings good fortune'' finishes explaining in sequence and summarizes with the judgment text.

'Heaven and Earth stimulate each other, and the ten thousand things are transformed and born' broadly clarifies the meaning of stimulation below.

If the two qi of Heaven and Earth did not stimulate, respond, and interact, the ten thousand things would have no way to be transformed and brought into being. From 'The sage' to 'can be seen.'

Correct Meaning: 'The sage stimulates human hearts, and the world is peaceful and harmonious': the sage establishes teachings to move people's hearts, causing them to turn from evil to good, after which the world attains peace and harmony.

'Observing what they stimulate, the dispositions of Heaven, Earth, and the ten thousand things can be seen' concludes with praise of the vastness of the Dao of Influence: in greatness it encompasses Heaven and Earth, in smallness it covers all things.

Moving upon encountering things is called disposition. Heaven, Earth, and all things mutually stimulate and respond according to their qi and category; therefore 'observing what they stimulate, the dispositions of Heaven, Earth, and the ten thousand things can be seen.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiGreat Image

From 'The Xiang Commentary says' to 'receives people with emptiness.' Correct Meaning: 'A lake on the mountain: Influence': the nature of a lake flows downward and can moisten what is below; the mountain's substance supports it from below and can receive its moisture.

With the mountain stimulating the lake, it forms Influence.

'The noble man receives people with emptiness': the noble man models himself after this Influence hexagram, with the mountain below and the lake above; thus he empties his bosom, not keeping himself full, receiving and accommodating all things without neglecting any; stimulating others in this way, none will fail to respond.
