Judgment

Sh&ng indicates that (under its conditions) there will be great progress and success. Seeking by (the qualities implied in it) to meet with the great man, its subject need have no anxiety. Advance to the south will be fortunate.

Tuan commentary

(We find) the weak (line), as it finds the opportunity, ascending upwards. We have (the attribute) of flexibility and that of obedience; we have the strong line (below) and its proper correlate above:—these things indicate that there will be ‘great progress and success.’

‘Seeking (by the qualities implied in Shăng) to meet with the great man, its subject need have no anxiety:’—there will be ground for congratulation. ‘Advance to the south will be fortunate:’—his aim will be carried out.

Great Image

(The trigram representing) wood and that for the earth with the wood growing in the midst of it form Shăng. The superior man, in accordance with this, pays careful attention to his virtue, and accumulates the small developments of it till it is high and great.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiJudgment

Pushing Upward means advancing and ascending.

The hexagram comes from Deliverance: the yielding line ascends to dwell in the fourth position; internally gentle (Xun) and externally compliant (Kun); Nine in the Second Place is firm and central, and the fifth corresponds to it; therefore its divination is like this.

"Southward expedition" means advancing forward.

Zhouyi BenyiTuan commentary

Explains the hexagram name through hexagram change. Explains the hexagram judgment through the hexagram's virtues and structure.

Zhouyi BenyiGreat Image

In Wang Su's edition, "yielding" (shun) is written as "cautious" (shen). We now note that other books quoting this also frequently write it as "cautious," where the meaning is even clearer; ancient characters were generally used interchangeably.

The explanation appears in the earlier part under Hexagram Youthful Folly.

Yichuan YizhuanJudgment

Pushing Upward in the Sequence of the Gua: Gathering Together means assembling; what gathers and ascends is called pushing upward; hence Pushing Upward follows.

When things accumulate and gather, they become ever taller and greater, gathering and rising; hence it is Pushing Upward, which is why it follows Gathering Together.

As a hexagram, Kun is above and Xun is below; wood is originally beneath the earth, being wood growing within the earth. Wood growing within the earth sprouts and grows ever taller, which is the image of Pushing Upward. Pushing Upward means advancing and ascending.

When pushing upward and advancing, there is the meaning of prevailing; and because of the hexagram's fine talents, it is supremely prevailing. Employing this Way to see the great person requires no anxiety or worry; advancing forward is auspicious.

"Southward expedition" means advancing forward.

Yichuan YizhuanTuan commentary

Speaking in terms of the two trigrams, the yielding line ascending refers to Kun moving upward. Xun, being low in substance, inclines downward, while Kun accords with the time and ascends upward. "In accord with the time" means the time is appropriate for pushing upward.

Once the yielding line ascends and completes Pushing Upward, the lower trigram is gentle and the upper trigram is compliant. Ascending through the way of gentleness and compliance can be called timely.

The second corresponds to the fifth with the way of firm centrality, and the fifth corresponds to the second with the virtue of central compliance. Able to be gentle and compliant, its pushing upward is timely; therefore it is supremely prevailing.

In the text of the Commentary on the Judgments, it is mistakenly written as "greatly prevailing," as explained under Hexagram Possession in Great Measure.

In general, the way of pushing upward must depend on the great person: ascending in rank depends on kings and dukes; ascending in the Way depends on sages and worthies.

Employing the way of gentle compliance and firm centrality to see the great person, one will surely fulfill one's pushing upward. "Have no anxiety" means not worrying that it will not be fulfilled.

Fulfilling one's pushing upward brings blessings to oneself, and blessings extend to other things. South is the direction people face; "southward expedition" means advancing forward.

Advancing forward fulfills one's pushing upward and enables one to carry out one's will; therefore it is auspicious.

Yichuan YizhuanGreat Image

Tall and great: Wood growing within the earth, growing and ascending upward, is the image of Pushing Upward. The noble person observes the image of Pushing Upward to cultivate his virtue with compliance, accumulating small bits to achieve what is tall and great.

Complying enables advancement; resisting leads to retreat. The advancement of all things is by the way of compliance.

If good is not accumulated, it is insufficient to make a name; the fullness of learning and the loftiness of virtue and morality are all reached through gradual accumulation.

Accumulating the small is the means to achieve the tall and great, which is the meaning of Pushing Upward.

Zhouyi ZhuJudgment

Being gentle and compliant allows one to push upward; yang lines do not occupy the honorable position, lacking stern, firm correctness, so one is not yet free from worry; hence by seeing the great person, one may "have no anxiety."

Proceeding southward with yielding adherence means attaching oneself to great brightness.

Zhouyi ZhuTuan commentary

The yielding line pushes upward in accordance with its time, and only then can it ascend. Pure yielding cannot push itself upward; rigid aloofness causes things not to follow.

Having both pushed upward in accord with the time and being "gentle and compliant, firm in the center and having correspondence," pushing upward with these, it therefore attains "great prevailing."

Ascending with gentleness and compliance to reach great brightness is what is meant by "the will being carried out."

Zhouyi ZhengyiJudgment

The Sub-commentary states: As for "Pushing Upward, supreme prevailing," "Pushing Upward" is the hexagram name. Pushing Upward carries the meaning of ascending and rising; ascending and attaining great smooth passage, hence it says, "Pushing Upward, supreme prevailing."

As for "seeing the great person brings no anxiety," pushing upward means ascending.

The yang line does not occupy the honorable position and lacks firm, stern correctness, so it is not yet free from anxiety; hence by seeing a person of great virtue, one can then be without worry and anxiety; therefore it says, "Seeing the great person brings no anxiety."

The Sub-commentary states: Not only must one see a person of great virtue, but it is also fitting to go to a place of bright yang. If one goes with yin to yin, it further deepens the darkness. South is the direction of bright yang, hence "a southward expedition is auspicious."

Zhouyi ZhengyiTuan commentary

The Sub-commentary states: The meaning of "Pushing Upward" is ascending from below to a high place; hence it takes Six in the Fifth Place dwelling in the honorable position to explain the intention behind the name "Pushing Upward."

Six in the Fifth Place, with yin-yielding substance, rises and ascends to an exalted position; if it does not accord with the time, it cannot push upward; hence it says, "The yielding line pushes upward in accordance with the time."

The Sub-commentary states: This explains the virtue of "supreme prevailing" based on the two trigrams and the line of Nine in the Second Place. "Pure yielding cannot push itself upward; rigid aloofness causes things not to follow."

The hexagram's structure is both gentle and compliant, and the line is firm and central, corresponding to the fifth; possessing these various virtues, it therefore attains "supreme prevailing."

The Sub-commentary states: As for "seeing the great person brings no anxiety; there are blessings," employing the virtue of great smooth passage to "see the great person," one does not worry about obstruction, and blessings and goodness will surely follow; hence it says, "There are blessings."

As for "a southward expedition is auspicious, the will is carried out," going into darkness would not be one's original will; now ascending to great brightness with gentle compliance, one's will can be carried out.

Zhouyi ZhengyiGreat Image

The Sub-commentary states: As for "wood growing within the earth: Pushing Upward," wood growing within the earth begins from what is minute and tiny to reach what is tall and great; hence it is the image of Pushing Upward.

As for "the noble person accords with virtue, accumulating the small to become tall and great," wood growing within the earth begins from a tiny sprout and ends with a tree of many arm-spans.

The noble person models himself on this, practicing his virtue with compliance and accumulating minor good deeds to establish a great reputation; hence the Appended Commentary says, "If good is not accumulated, it is insufficient to make a name," which is this.
