Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The top line dwells at the conclusion of Treading. At its conclusion, one examines what he has practiced to investigate its goodness, evil, misfortune, and good fortune; if he circles back, it is good and auspicious.

"Circles back" means revolving fully, complete with nothing left unfulfilled. When examining a person's conduct at its conclusion, if from beginning to end it is complete and free of blemish, it is the height of goodness. Therefore it brings supreme good fortune.

A person's good or ill fortune is tied to what he treads—the amount of good and evil, the magnitude of fortune and misfortune.

The top line is the end of Treading. When a person's conduct is good and auspicious, and at its conclusion circles back without defect, he is a person of great blessings and celebrations. In human conduct, what is precious is having a worthy end.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Omens of misfortune and good fortune arise from what one treads; dwelling at the extreme of Treading, the way of conduct is complete. Hence one can "examine conduct" and "investigate omens."

Dwelling at the extreme and responding to joyousness, he is high without being in danger; this is his circling back. The way of conduct achieves great completion; hence "supreme good fortune."

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Zhengyi commentary says: "Examining conduct to investigate omens": omens refer to auspicious or inauspicious signs.

Nine at the Top dwells at the extreme of Treading, where the way of conduct is already complete; hence one examines the deeds he has practiced, their good and evil, gain and loss, to investigate the omens of misfortune and good fortune.

"Circling back brings supreme good fortune": "xuán" means turning back. Nine at the Top dwells at the extreme of Treading, responding below to the joyousness of Dui; high without danger, he does not fall from "Treading," but can turn back and carry it out.

The way of conduct achieves great completion; hence "supreme good fortune."
