‘A quiet and solitary man, to whom, being firm and correct, there will be good fortune:’—holding the due mean, he will not allow himself to be thrown into disorder.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Firm and central below, with no correspondence above, this presents the image of a level, smooth path of conduct, and of a solitary, secluded person maintaining perseverance. If a secluded hermit walks this path and meets this divination, he will be persevering and auspicious.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Nine in the Second Place dwells in softness, broad and tolerant, holding the Central Position; what he treads is the level and easy path.

Although what he treads is the level and easy path, it still requires a quiet, tranquil person to dwell in it; then he can remain persevering and auspicious. Nine in the Second Place is yang and aspires to advance upward; hence it carries the admonition of the secluded hermit.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

The way of conduct lies in quiet tranquility: when the inner self is tranquil and upright, what one treads is peaceful and broad. If the center is restless and hasty, how could one rest securely in what one treads?

Therefore, only a secluded person can be steadfast and auspicious, because his inner heart is calm and quiet, not throwing itself into confusion through gain and desire.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

The way of conduct values modesty and dislikes dwelling in fullness; it strives for utmost sincerity and abhors outward embellishment. Here line two, being yang, occupies a yin position, treading upon modesty.

Dwelling within, it treads the center; hidden or manifest, it remains the same. The beauty of the way of conduct reaches its height here. Therefore "the way of conduct is level and smooth," free from perilous narrows. Persevering in seclusion, it is rightly auspicious.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

From "Nine in the Second Place" to "the secluded hermit's perseverance brings good fortune." The Zhengyi commentary says: "The way of conduct is level and smooth": "level and smooth" depicts an easy, unhindered path.

Nine in the Second Place, being yang, dwells in a yin place, treading upon modesty and retreat; being able to maintain modesty, "the way of conduct is level and smooth," easy and free from dangerous perils.

"The secluded hermit's perseverance brings good fortune": since there are no dangerous perils, a person living in hidden seclusion who maintains correctness attains good fortune.

Regarding Wang Bi's note, "The way of conduct values modesty" to "it is rightly auspicious": The Zhengyi commentary says: "The way of conduct values modesty" means the path of conduct esteems modest retreat; only then can one interact with all things.

"Treading" also means propriety, hence "values modesty." "Dwelling within, it treads the center; hidden or manifest, it remains the same": the way of conduct values modesty and dislikes dwelling in fullness; occupying yin with yang, it esteems modest virtue.

"Dwelling within, it treads the center," taking trust as its way, not considering external prominence as glory or internal seclusion as humiliation.

Even if dwelling outside, it would still tread the center in modest retreat; whether in hiding or in prominence, the mind remains equal, hence "hidden or manifest, it remains the same."

"Persevering in seclusion, it is rightly auspicious": because it is in the center of the inner trigram, it is said to be "in seclusion." Modest and holding the center, this is upright perseverance.

Being able to practice this correctness in seclusion, it is said that "it is rightly auspicious."

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

The Zhengyi commentary says: "The center does not throw itself into confusion" explains "the secluded hermit's perseverance brings good fortune." Because he dwells in the center, he does not throw himself into confusion due to peril.

Having been able to withdraw modestly into secluded dwelling, how could there be any danger to disturb him?
