I Ching casting

Positioned at the base of the upper earth trigram directly above the hardworking third line, six in the fourth place holds a pivotal transitional rank.

The classical text speaks of flourishing or expressing modesty without violating natural guidelines, highlighting how gentle deference defuses the inherent awkwardness of riding upon a strong subordinate.

In plain terms, knowing your exact place and promoting the merits of others keeps every door open.

Career

In workplace dynamics, this represents an effective liaison or middle manager who excels at balancing executive expectations with team capabilities.

Rather than competing for personal dominance, the strategy focuses on eliminating organizational friction through transparent communication and fair delegation. To put it simply, success comes from facilitating others and following agreed-upon rules rather than asserting ego.

Love & relationships

In romantic partnerships, this line advises emotional tact, diplomatic problem-solving, and a readiness to compromise over minor disputes. Traditional commentaries suggest that avoiding moral high ground preserves domestic harmony and allows both partners to feel respected.

In short, choosing understanding over winning arguments keeps relationship channels healthy and collaborative.

Wealth

Financial affairs benefit from adherence to standard compliance, clear contractual terms, and fair division of shared revenues. Classical advice cautions against overreaching for unilateral profit, favoring equitable arrangements that sustain goodwill among partners.

In brief, playing by the rules and sharing rewards fairly will protect your assets and maintain fruitful partnerships.

‘One, whose action would be in every way advantageous, stirs up his humility the more:‘(but in doing so) he does not act contrary to the (proper) rule.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

撝 (huī): fanqie spelling hū-huí; synonymous with 揮 (to wave, to direct, to manifest). It is yielding yet achieves correctness; being above yet capable of placing itself below, its prognosis is that nothing fails to be advantageous.

However, because it resides above Nine in the Third Place, it is cautioned that it should all the more manifest its modesty, demonstrating an attitude of daring not to rest complacent in its position.

This means it does not commit an excess.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The fourth line resides in the upper trigram, pressing close to the ruler's throne. Six in the fifth place is a ruler who abides in modest yielding; Nine in the Third Place possesses great merit and virtue, entrusted by superiors and revered by the multitude.

The fourth line resides above Nine in the Third Place; it must respectfully and reverently serve the ruler of modest virtue, and humbly and deferentially yield to the minister of toilsome modesty.

In its movements and actions, nothing fails to be advantageous in demonstrating modesty. '撝' conveys the image of waving, spreading, and directing, like the beckoning and motion of a person's hand. In action, rest, advance, or retreat, it must manifest its modesty.

This is because it occupies a position of much dread, and moreover stands above a worthy minister.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

In human modesty, there is an appropriate measure for its exercise; one must not exceed what is fitting—as seen in Six in the fifth place sometimes resorting to punitive expeditions.

Only the fourth line, occupying a position close to the sovereign and presiding above a meritorious, toilsome minister, finds that in every movement and deed nothing fails to be advantageous in demonstrating modesty.

Acting thus, it conforms to the standard; hence it is said, 'it does not violate the rule,' which means it attains what is fitting.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Residing above the third line while practicing modesty is the principle of coming down from above to place oneself below the lower. Serving the fifth line while practicing modesty and compliance is the proper course of advancing upward.

Having exhausted the principles of serving superiors and condescending to inferiors, 'nothing fails to be advantageous.' In every gesture and direction, it is modest, thereby not violating the rule.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Zhengyi commentary states: 'Nothing fails to be advantageous' means that residing above the third line while practicing modesty embodies the principle of descending from above to be beneath the lower.

Serving the fifth line while practicing modesty and compliance embodies the course of advancing upward. Fulfilling to the utmost the proper way of serving the superior and condescending to the lower, nothing fails to be advantageous.

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

The Zhengyi commentary states: 'In every gesture and direction, all is modesty, not violating the rule' explains the meaning of 'nothing fails to be advantageous in demonstrating modesty.'

The reason why 'in every gesture and direction, all is modesty' is that by not violating the rules and standards, its every movement accords with principle; thus nothing fails to be advantageous.
