Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Yielding and central, it dwells in the place of honor, with Nine at the second position supporting it with virtue. Managing decay through this can bring renown and praise; hence its image and divination are like this.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The fifth line dwells in the place of honor, possessing a yin-yielding substance while facing the ruler's task of management, responding below to Nine at the second position: it can employ a firm and yang minister.

Though able to respond to and employ a firm and yang worthy below, its own substance is yin-yielding, so it cannot initiate foundations; carrying on previous undertakings, however, is feasible. Hence it is 'managing the father's decay.'

Establishing foundations and transmitting a lineage cannot succeed without firm and clear talent; an inheriting ruler, though of weak endowment, if able to employ firm and worthy ministers, can continue well and achieve praise and renown.

Tai Jia and King Cheng both won renown through their ministers.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Managing the father's decay and meeting with praise occurs because the worthy below supports and assists it with the virtue of firm centrality.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling in honor with yielding, employing the center and finding response, carrying on previous achievements through this is the way to win praise.
