I Ching casting

Line 3 sits out of balance at the top of Lake, riding atop the vigorous second yang and relying on hollow pleasantries to maintain influence.

The Xiaoxiang observes that its position is improper, yet emphasizes that if anxiety prompts immediate course correction, the fault will not endure. Cease relying on superficial charm or hasty promises, and immediately refocus on substantive, verifiable effort.

Career

Relying on glib assurances, superficial networking, or overstated claims will fail to win genuine support from colleagues and superiors. If you sense brewing skepticism or growing operational friction, treat it as a timely alarm to audit your deliverables and tighten discipline.

Drop public relations posturing in favor of honest accountability to restore your professional credibility.

Love & relationships

Superficial compliments and hollow reassurances cannot substitute for emotional presence and authentic accountability in a partnership. If a partner begins to withdraw or express doubt, heed the warning sign immediately by engaging in honest, vulnerable dialogue.

Replace flattering words with dependable daily actions to heal fractures in mutual trust.

Wealth

Attractive, sugar-coated investment pitches or trendy ventures may conceal structural weaknesses that threaten capital preservation. If intuitive unease or early discrepancies surface, exit questionable commitments without hesitation rather than hoping for a lucky turn.

Walk away from glossy but untested propositions to protect your assets before small missteps compound.

Line statement

3. The third line, divided, shows one well pleased (indeed) to advance, (but whose action) will be in no way advantageous. If he become anxious about it (however), there will be no error.

Small Image

‘He (shows himself) well pleased to advance:’—his position is not that appropriate to him. ‘If he become anxious, however, about his action,’ his error will not be continued.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Yin-yielding, neither central nor correct, dwelling at the top of the lower trigram: this is the image of presiding over others with sweet cajolery. Its divination naturally offers nothing advantageous; yet if one can feel distress and reform, there will be no blame.

Exhorting people to turn toward goodness, the teaching is profound indeed.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The third line dwells at the top of the lower trigram, one who presides over others. Being yin-yielding and of the joyful trigram, and dwelling neither central nor upright, it presides over others with sweet cajolery.

Being above yet presiding over those below with sweet words represents a grave loss of virtue, offering no advantage whatsoever. Dui's nature is joyful, and here it rides above two yang lines; with yang waxing and advancing upward, it feels uneasy and becomes ever sweeter.

If, realizing the danger and fear, it worries over it and can preserve modesty, maintain rectitude, and conduct itself with utmost sincerity, there will be no blame. Crooked flattery arises from oneself; if one can feel distress and reform, what blame could remain?

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

A yin-yielding person dwelling neither central nor upright, occupying the top of the lower trigram and riding above two yang lines, is one whose place is not proper.

If he can recognize fear and worry over it, he will surely strive to reform himself, so his fault and blame will not endure.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

'Sweet' is a name for flattery, crookedness, cajolery, and improper conduct. Treading an improper position and living in an age when the firm is waxing, yet approaching things with crooked flattery, it is only natural that 'nothing is advantageous.'

If one can fully grieve over the peril and reform one's ways, firmness will not harm rectitude; hence 'the blame will not endure.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The correct commentary explains: 'Sweet approach' refers to sweet words and fawning cajolery. Treading an improper position, living in an age when the firm is waxing, yet presiding over things with crooked flattery, 'nothing is advantageous.'

'Having grieved over it, there is no blame': 'ji' means completely. If one can fully worry over the danger, firmness will not harm rectitude; hence 'there is no blame.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

The correct commentary explains: 'Having grieved over it, the blame does not endure' means that if one can fully worry over the matter and reform one's conduct, the blame ceases and will no longer last; hence 'there is no blame.'
