Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Occupying the top of the Gua and dwelling at the end of Approach, being generous and magnanimous in approaching is the way to good fortune and freedom from blame. Therefore its image and divination are like this.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Six at the Top is the culmination of The Receptive (Earth) and the utmost in yielding compliance, yet dwelling at the end of Approach, it is generous and magnanimous in approaching.

Although it is not in proper correspondence with the initial line and the second, yin in general seeks yang, and furthermore, being utmost in compliance, its will is set on following the two yang lines.

Being honored yet responding to the humble, high yet following the low, honoring the worthy and adopting the good—this is the utmost of generosity and magnanimity; hence it is called "generous approach," which is why it brings good fortune and freedom from blame.

When yin and yielding are above, they are not capable of approaching others and ought properly to incur blame; but because of being generous and magnanimous in yielding to the firm, it has good fortune and is without blame.

Six dwells at the end of Approach, yet does not take the meaning of an extremity, for approaching has no fault of going too far; therefore it solely carries the meaning of thickness and generosity. The top is a position without rank, spoken of merely because it is on top.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Its will is directed inward, responding to the initial line and the second. Its will compliantly yields to firm yang and is earnest and generous; its good fortune can well be known.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Occupying the culmination of The Receptive (Earth), it approaches with generosity.

Its will is set on assisting the worthy, taking generosity as its virtue; although it occurs during the growth of the firm, the firm does not harm what is thick and generous, and therefore it is "without blame."

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Zhengyi says: "Dun" means generous and thick.

Six at the Top dwells at the top of The Receptive (Earth), approaching with generosity and magnanimity; its will is set on assisting the worthy, and it takes generosity as virtue, hence it is said, "Generous approach brings good fortune."

Although it occurs during the growth of the firm, because its will and conduct are generous and thick, the firm does not harm it, and therefore it is "without blame."

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

Zhengyi says: Explaining the meaning of "Generous approach brings good fortune." Although at the culmination of the upper trigram, its will is constantly directed toward the two yang lines within, intending to assist the worthy; therefore it attains good fortune.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Six at the Top, line 6, Upper-Medium: A hazy autumn moon shines upon vermilion doors; cockcrow arises in the distance from deep within the woods. Naturally a noble benefactor comes to guide and receive you; why bother with clever words like an oriole flitting through trees?
