20. Contemplation (观)

Line 2

If this line changes it transforms into 59. Dispersion (Dissolution) (涣)

Modern reading

Six in the second place reflects an inward, limited vantage point akin to peering through a narrow crack, which excels in maintaining domestic order but falters in wide public leadership. It encourages mastering your immediate realm while recognizing the natural boundaries of your current perspective.

I Ching casting

Holding a central and correct yin position in the lower earth trigram, this line maintains harmony within its localized sphere while lacking a panoramic view of the outer world.

Traditional readings interpret peering through a crevice as beneficial for domestic constancy, yet caution that applying such narrow vision to macro affairs risks division, as echoed by the transformed Hexagram 59.

The takeaway is to excel at internal duties while resisting the urge to pass judgment on broader issues beyond your direct line of sight.

Career

In professional environments, this position favors meticulous operational tasks, internal auditing, and back-office diligence where attention to fine details is essential.

Friction can arise if a specialist attempts to direct cross-departmental strategy through the lens of a single silo. Focus on perfecting your assigned responsibilities rather than trying to dictate high-level policy.

Love & relationships

Interpersonally, a restricted perspective can foster oversensitivity, micromanagement, and unwarranted suspicion regarding a partner's private life. Classical tradition views this inward focus as protective of domestic stability, provided it does not suffocate personal freedom.

Give your partner room to breathe and avoid scrutinizing minor habits that have little bearing on mutual trust.

Wealth

Financial affairs benefit from careful bookkeeping, tight household budget management, and conservative saving habits. Navigating complex macro investments or unproven ventures with partial information carries heightened operational risk.

Safeguard your known earnings and avoid speculative commitments outside your area of expertise.

Line statement

2. The second line, divided, shows one peeping out from a door. It would be advantageous if it were (merely) the firm correctness of a female.

Small Image

‘The firm correctness of a woman, in peeping out from a door’ is also a thing to be ashamed of (in a superior man).

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Yin and yielding, it resides within and looks outward, which is the image of peeping contemplation and the proper perseverance of a woman. Hence its divination is such. If a grown man obtains it, it is not advantageous to him.

Zhouyi BenyiSmall Image

In the case of a grown man, it is shameful.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Six in the second place corresponds to the fifth; it contemplates the fifth. The dao of the fifth—firm, yang, central, and correct—is not something that the dim, yin, yielding, and weak second line can clearly behold; therefore, it is merely like viewing through a peep.

A peeping view, though catching a small glimpse, cannot see very clearly.

Since the second line cannot clearly see the firm, yang, central, and correct dao, it is advantageous for it to be like a woman's perseverance: though she cannot see very clearly, she is able to follow and obey, which is the way of a woman; in a woman, this constitutes perseverance.

Since the second line cannot clearly see the dao of Nine in the fifth place, if it can follow and obey like a woman, it will not lose its Central Position and correctness, and this is what makes it advantageous.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

If a noble person cannot behold the great dao of firm, yang, central correctness, but only peeps at its vague resemblance, even though he can comply, he merely shares the perseverance of a woman; this indeed is shameful.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling within, it has nothing broad to examine or behold. Its nature is yielding and weak, capable only of following and complying. Yet having a corresponding partner, it is not completely unenlightened; because what it sees is narrow, it is said: "Peeping contemplation."

Dwelling in contemplation and having Correct Position, yielding and compliant with little vision, it is said: "Advantageous for the perseverance of a woman"—such is the way of a woman.

But dwelling in the time of "Great Contemplation," occupying Central Position and Correct Position, yet unable to view broadly and examine widely, doing nothing more than peeping, it is truly "shameful."

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

From "The Image says" to "Advantageous for the perseverance of a woman."

Correct Meaning: As for "Peeping contemplation, advantageous for the perseverance of a woman," being a yin line, dwelling within the inner trigram, and possessing a yielding and weak nature, it can only steal a peep and observe.

Such a matter is advantageous only for a woman's perseverance, not for a grown man to practice.

Regarding the commentary from "Dwelling within" to "truly shameful": Correct Meaning: "Yet having a corresponding partner, it is not completely unenlightened" means that Six in the second place, yielding and weak within, still has Nine in the fifth place—firm and yang—to correspond with it; thus it can steal a peep and is not completely unenlightened.

Being boyishly unenlightened pertains to Six at the Beginning; hence the second line can peep and observe outward. Both "contemplation" in boyish contemplation and in peeping contemplation are pronounced in the falling tone.
