20. Contemplation (观)

Line 1

If this line changes it transforms into 42. Increase (益)

Modern reading

Hexagram 20 at the initial yin line depicts looking through the immature gaze of a child, which carries little fault in an amateur but hobbles a leader. Widening your field of view is essential to moving beyond naive assumptions.

I Ching casting

Stationed at the bottom of the hexagram, far from the illuminating upper lines, this yin position symbolizes an extremely narrow vantage point.

The line transitions toward Increase (Hexagram 42), indicating that while potential exists, current understanding is restricted by partial knowledge. Seek guidance from seasoned mentors to transcend beginner misconceptions.

Career

Junior staff may get by executing routine assignments without understanding corporate context, but aspiring leaders cannot afford such tunnel vision. Criticizing broad operational decisions based on incomplete departmental gossip undermines your credibility.

Focus on learning systemic workflows to expand your strategic usefulness.

Love & relationships

Superficial expectations or emotional petulance risk breeding preventable misunderstandings within romantic partnerships. Clinging to juvenile romantic fantasies blinds you to the mature practical compromises a real partnership requires.

Outgrow self-centered drama to let the relationship mature gracefully.

Wealth

Financial decisions handled with novice gullibility expose your portfolio to market noise and superficial tips. Chasing petty, short-term fluctuations frequently triggers unnecessary trading fees and preventable losses.

Study sound financial basics and ignore unsubstantiated rumors to protect your savings.

Line statement

1. The first line, divided, shows the looking of a lad;—not blamable in men of inferior rank, but matter for regret in superior men.

Small Image

‘The looking of a lad shown by the first six, (divided); indicates the way of the inferior people.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

The hexagram takes showing and contemplation as its meaning, based on Nine in the Fifth Place as master. The individual lines take looking and viewing as their meaning, all looking toward Nine in the Fifth Place.

Six at the Beginning is yielding yin below, unable to see far, presenting the image of boyish contemplation.

This is the way of petty men, but a shame for a noble person; therefore, in divination, for a petty man there is no blame, but if a noble person obtains it, it is shameful.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Six, with a yielding yin substance, dwells far from yang; therefore what it observes is shallow and near, like a young child; hence it is called "boyish contemplation."

Firm, yang, central, and upright above is a sage ruler; being near him, one sees the abundance of his Dao and virtue, and what one contemplates is deep and far. The initial line is far from him, so what it sees is dim, like the contemplation of an ignorant youth.

Petty men are common folk; what they see is dim and shallow, unable to recognize the way of the noble person, which is their normal station and not enough to be called a fault. If a noble person acts like this, it is base and shameful.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

What it observes is not clear, like a young child, which is the lot of petty men; hence it is called "the way of petty men."

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling in a time of contemplation, yet farthest from the court's splendor, embodying yin and yielding, unable to advance on its own, and having no discerning vision, hence it is called "boyish contemplation."

Merely complying and yielding without being able to accomplish anything is the way of petty men; hence it is said: "For a petty man, no blame." If a noble person dwells in a time of great contemplation and engages in "boyish contemplation," is it not shameful?

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Zhengyi says: "Boyish contemplation": dwelling in a time of contemplation yet farthest from the court's splendid contemplation, being weak and yielding, unable to advance on one's own, having no discerning vision, one views merely like a young child.

As for "for a petty man, no blame; for a noble person, distress": because this viewing aims merely at compliance without the ability to accomplish anything, practiced by a petty man it merely escapes blame, but practiced by a noble person, it is base and shameful.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Six at the Beginning, line 1, Upper-Upper: A wild ghost secretly draws its bow, striking the target and startling the master. The red sun sinks into rivers and seas; matters in empty air come to naught.
