‘The freedom from error attached to (the subject of) the topmost line, with no ornament but the (simple white),’ shows how he has attained his aim.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

When adornment reaches its ultimate limit, it returns to the origin and reverts to having no color; this is skill in repairing error. Hence its image and divination are such.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Nine at the Top represents the culmination of Adornment. When embellishment reaches its peak, it lapses into artificiality and vanity; only if one can keep one's adornment white and plain will there be no fault of error. White means plain.

Valuing plainness preserves one's original authenticity. So-called valuing plain simplicity does not mean having no ornament at all, but not allowing ornament to swallow up reality.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

'White adornment brings no blame' because it is at the top and attains its will.

Nine at the Top attains its will because it occupies the highest position, embellishes what is yielding, and brings the work of adornment to completion, while the sovereign Six in the Fifth Place receives its adornment; thus, although dwelling in a place without official station, it truly presides over the merit of adornment—this is attaining its will.

It differs from lines occupying the extreme position in other hexagrams. Since it is at the top and attains its will at the peak of Adornment, it is on the verge of the fault of hollow pretension; hence it is cautioned that remaining plain and simple brings no blame.

Adornment must not be carried to excess.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling at the end of Adornment, when adornment ends it returns to plainness; thus abiding in plain simplicity without laboring over decorative pattern brings 'no blame.' Using white as adornment and being free from grief and worry—this is one who attains his will.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Proper Meaning states: 'White adornment brings no blame'—'dwelling at the end of Adornment,' when decoration concludes it reverts to plainness; hence remaining in plain simplicity without toiling over decoration is why it says 'White adornment brings no blame.'

Preserving one's will and adhering to authenticity, one attains one's true nature; hence the Image says, 'The one at the top attains his will,' meaning dwelling at the top and realizing his aspiration.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Nine at the Top, sixth line, top-top: The bright moon is round once more; the countenance is delighted and serene. Wind and clouds escort each other along, harmonizing for ten thousand years.
