I Ching casting

Although situated at the threshold of the perilous upper trigram Kan, Six in the fourth place holds a proper yin seat and finds a natural resonance with the strong initial yang line.

The line text describes horses hesitating before a union is pursued, while the Xiaoxiang commentary praises advancing toward help as a manifestation of clarity. Classical tradition suggests that hesitation dissolves once aligned assistance is welcomed.

In short, recognizing when you need help and actively seeking capable allies will turn stagnation into smooth progress.

Career

In professional endeavors, this line occupies an intermediary role where individual power is modest, but bridging resources creates major leverage.

Rather than struggling alone against initial friction, organizational traditions favor building partnerships and seeking mentorship from skilled counterparts. Initiating collaboration demonstrates tactical maturity rather than weakness.

In short, asking for qualified support and teaming up with capable colleagues is your fastest route past current obstacles.

Love & relationships

After an initial phase of uncertainty or pacing back and forth, the relationship reaches an opportune moment for open pursuit and commitment.

The classical imagery of seeking marriage signifies that sincere, well-matched outreach dispels lingering hesitation and establishes mutual trust. Taking an intentional step forward allows both parties to share responsibilities rather than facing uncertainties alone.

In short, setting aside hesitation to communicate your honest intentions will bring warmth and mutual clarity.

Wealth

Financial momentum here depends on pooled capability and structured cooperation rather than solo ventures. Traditional analysis associates this line with leveraging external networks and formal agreements to navigate early resource shortages safely.

Joint initiatives and transparent arrangements help distribute risk while creating steady value. In short, combining resources with trustworthy partners offers a far more reliable path than attempting to fund or manage everything on your own.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Being yin and yielding in Difficulty at the Beginning, one cannot advance upward; hence the image of 'mounting a horse, hesitating.'

However, Nine at the Beginning maintains correctness below and corresponds to oneself; therefore, the divination is that seeking marriage below will bring good fortune.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Six in the fourth place, with a yielding and obedient nature, occupies a position close to the ruler, favored by the superior; yet her talent is insufficient to overcome Difficulty at the Beginning, so she wishes to advance but halts again—hence 'mounting a horse, hesitating.'

Since oneself is insufficient to overcome the difficulty of the times, if one can seek the worthy to assist oneself, then relief can be achieved. Nine at the Beginning is a worthy of firm yang, the proper correlate and marriage partner of the fourth.

If one seeks this firm yang partner and goes forward to jointly assist the ruler who is firm, yang, central, and correct, overcoming the difficulty of the times, then it is auspicious and nothing will fail to be advantageous.

Dwelling in the rank of duke or minister, though one's own talent cannot overcome the difficulty of the era, if one can seek out worthy men below, draw close to them, and employ them, what difficulty cannot be overcome?

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Knowing one's own insufficiency, seeking the worthy to assist oneself, and only then going forward—this can truly be called clarity. Occupying a position where one can summon help, yet failing to do so through one's own inability and plunging blindly ahead, is true benightedness.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Although the second line is adjacent to the initial line, it holds fast to chastity and does not comply, posing no obstacle to the fourth's aspiration. Seeking to unite in harmony, going forward will surely be accepted.

Therefore it says: 'Going brings good fortune; nothing fails to be advantageous.'

Discerning the true condition and disposition of the other.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Correct Meaning: Six in the fourth place corresponds to the initial line, hence 'mounting a horse.' Fearing that the second line would obstruct its path, it initially hesitates and turns back.

Since the second line does not comply with the initial line, the fourth seeks him in marriage and will certainly achieve union; this is why 'going brings good fortune; nothing fails to be advantageous.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

Correct Meaning: Seeking the initial line to unite in marriage, one clearly discerns the conditions and dispositions of both the initial and second lines, knowing that the initial line will receive oneself and that the second will not thwart one's aspiration; this is one's clarity.
