I Ching casting

In classical interpretation, the central and correct second line suffers an injury to the left thigh yet secures good fortune through the rescue of a strong horse.

The Xiaoxiang commentary attributes this favorable turn to yielding in accordance with standard rules, pointing through the transformation into Hexagram 11 toward eventual peace.

When hit by an unexpected setback, relying on proven allies and sound fundamentals turns adversity around.

Career

An unexpected organizational hurdle or project disruption may inflict a localized blow on your responsibilities, but your foundational competence remains solid.

Actively reaching out to seasoned mentors or leaning on dependable colleagues provides the operational leverage needed to regain balance. Acknowledge the setback calmly and lean on trusted collaborators to restore stability.

Love & relationships

External pressures or unintentional friction may create a painful rough patch between partners, yet the underlying goodwill of the relationship remains intact. Rather than withdrawing into resentment, engaging in honest dialogue and seeking wise counsel can mend the rift rapidly.

Working through mutual hurt with patience and dependable support restores genuine closeness.

Wealth

Financial plans may suffer a localized hit from unexpected expenses, placing short-term strain on available cash flow. The classical view favors drawing promptly on robust backup reserves or established credit facilities rather than waiting passively.

Securing immediate liquidity through reliable reserves keeps a temporary shortfall from turning into structural distress.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

The character 拯 (zhěng) is pronounced in the rising tone (zhěng), same as in the initial line of Hexagram Huan. The injury is not yet severe; if rescued quickly, one escapes. Hence the image and omen are like this.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Six in the Second Place, with supreme luminous talent, attains central correctness and embodies compliance.

Adapting to the times and carrying itself with consummate goodness, even though the noble person conducts themselves well, during a time when yin darkness and petty men wound the light, one cannot avoid being injured.

However, because the noble person has the proper way to conduct themselves, the injury cannot strike deep, and in the end they are able to evade it. The feet are for walking; the thigh is above the shin and foot, so its function for walking is not the most critical.

Moreover, the left side is less handy to use; for human hands and feet, the right side is generally more adept, and only when cocking a crossbow does one use the left, since the right leg serves as the foundation.

Being injured in the left thigh signifies an injury to one's movement that is not critical. Even so, there must be a way of self-deliverance: using a strong and vigorous horse brings swift rescue and good fortune.

When the noble person is injured by yin darkness, because they conduct themselves properly, their wound is not deep; because they have the means of self-rescue, their escape is swift.

If the means of rescue are not robust, the injury sustained will be deep; hence it says that a strong horse brings good fortune.

As Six in the Second Place dwells in brightness beneath yin darkness, what is called "good fortune" is merely escaping harm, not that one can actively accomplish great undertakings at this time.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Six in the Second Place attains good fortune because it abides in compliance and observes proper rule. "Rule" refers to the way of central correctness.

Being able to comply while obtaining central correctness is how one preserves good fortune during a time when brightness is injured.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

"Wounded in the left thigh" means that one's walking cannot be vigorous.

Dwelling in the center with yielding compliance, it uses this to obscure its brightness; in advancing it does not separate itself eccentrically from its peers, and in retreating it does not press too close to disaster, drawing neither suspicion nor dread—this is "complying according to rule."

Therefore, it can be rescued with a strong horse and achieve good fortune. It does not need to droop its wings before escaping.

Complying according to proper rule, it is therefore not suspected.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Sub-commentary states: "Darkening of the light, wounded in the left thigh": with the left thigh wounded, one's walking cannot be vigorous.

Six in the Second Place "dwells in the center with yielding compliance, using this to obscure its brightness," refraining from rigid and assertive actions; hence it says "Darkening of the light, wounded in the left thigh."

Scholar Zhuang states: "Mentioning the left side indicates a minor injury." Compared to an injury on the right, it is not critical.

"Wounded in the left thigh" makes clear that one's evasion of disaster is not ostentatious or drastic, so one is not suspected by the benighted ruler; one still maintains one's station without fleeing in terror, and can then leisurely use a horse to rescue oneself and obtain robust good fortune.

Hence it says: "Rescued with a horse that is strong: good fortune."

The Sub-commentary states: "Complying according to rule" means complying with the standards of the benighted ruler, unlike Nine at the Beginning who set himself drastically apart.

Thus, one is not suspected by the benighted ruler and attains the good fortune of rescue with a horse.
