I Ching casting

Six in the fourth place is a yin line in a yin position, correct and properly corresponding with the initial nine; situated at the base of the upper Kun trigram, it occupies a position deeply cognizant of hidden realms.

The classical tradition interprets the fourth line as penetrating deep into the inner sanctum of the darkening force and uncovering its genuine intent. Having grasped the underlying reality, the prudent course is to step out through the courtyard and depart safely.

Recognizing that a situation is irredeemably compromised is your signal to step away completely.

Career

You may uncover hidden organizational politics or fundamental misalignments that confirm an environment is no longer viable for constructive work.

Attempting to reform a deeply troubled culture from within is unlikely to succeed, making a planned and discreet transition the most professional path. Use your clear understanding of the situation to prepare an orderly exit while protecting your track record.

Love & relationships

A candid realization about mismatched values or an unsustainable relationship dynamic reveals the true state of affairs. Once the underlying motives and persistent incompatibilities are fully recognized, prolonging ambiguous hope only deepens emotional fatigue.

Accepting what you have learned allows you to step back with dignity and maintain healthy personal boundaries.

Wealth

Careful due diligence or direct observation reveals fundamental flaws in a business venture or partnership that were previously obscured. Rather than waiting for circumstances to deteriorate further, the prudent course is an orderly withdrawal or risk reduction.

Exiting quietly once the hidden risks are exposed protects your capital from severe downside.

Line statement

4. The fourth line, divided, shows its subject (just) entered into the left side of the belly (of the dark land). (But) he is able to carry out the mind appropriate (in the condition indicated by) Ming t, quitting the gate and courtyard (of the lord of darkness).

‘He has (just) entered into the left side of the belly (of the dark land):’—he is still able to carry out the idea in his (inner) mind.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

The meaning of this line is not entirely clear. I suspect that the "left belly" refers to a secluded, hidden place. "Catching the heart of the darkened light upon leaving the gate and courtyard" carries the sense of successfully making one's escape far away.

It means that whoever obtains this line through divination should conduct themselves in such a manner. The Li trigram represents the virtue of supreme brightness, while the Kun trigram represents the realm of supreme darkness.

For the lower three lines, light is outside the darkness; hence they carry themselves differently according to their distance and rank.

Six in the Fourth Place, with yielding correctness, dwells in the dark realm but is still shallow, so it can still fulfill its wish to depart far away.

Six in the Fifth Place, with yielding centrality, dwells in the dark realm and is already hard-pressed; hence it is the image of facing inner troubles, rectifying one's resolve, and dimming one's brightness.

Six at the Top reaches the extremity of darkness; hence it wounds its own brightness to the point of complete obscurity, and also harms the brightness of others. For the lower five lines are all noble persons, and only the top line is the benighted ruler.

意 (yì) rhymes with 臆 (yì).

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Six in the Fourth Place is a yin line dwelling in a yin position, in the body of yielding compliance, occupying a station close to the ruler. This represents an insidious, petty person in high station who complies with the ruler through soft flattery.

Six in the Fifth Place is the ruler's seat in Darkening of the Light, the master who wounds brightness. Line 4 compliantly flatters him to solidify their bond.

When petty men serve their sovereign, they never unite with him openly through righteous principle; they invariably ingratiate themselves with their superior through dark, crooked paths.

The right side is fit for action, hence representing open and manifest places; the left side is unfit for action, hence representing secluded and devious places.

Human hands and feet primarily use the right; the world calls an obscure post a "leftward demotion"—thus the left is a secluded and devious realm. Line 4 enters deeply into its sovereign through devious paths; hence it says "entering the left belly."

Entering the belly means the intimacy of their association. Because the association is deep, it captures his heart. Whenever traitorous villains gain the trust of their ruler, it is always by captivating his heart. Without captivating his heart, how could he remain deluded?

"Upon leaving the gate and courtyard": having gained trust in the inner chambers, one then acts upon it abroad. When a treacherous minister serves a benighted ruler, he must first bewitch his heart before he can carry out his schemes outside.

The *Xiang* says: "Entering the left belly" means capturing his heart's intention. "Entering the left belly" means entering into the ruler through crooked ways to capture his heart and mind. Gaining his heart is why he never wakes up to the truth.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

The left is taken for its compliant yielding. Entering the left belly, one captures his heart and intentions; thus, though close, there is no peril. Adapting to the times to evade danger, one merely walks out of the gate and courtyard, able to avoid defiance or confrontation.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Sub-commentary states: "Entering the left belly, capturing the heart of the darkened light": in all matters, the right is used for action. Following the left rather than the right signifies humble compliance without opposition. The "belly" is the seat of intimate sentiments.

Six in the Fourth Place embodies yielding, dwells in Kun, and is close to Six at the Top; this means being able to maintain humble compliance, "entering the left belly" and capturing the heart and mind of the darkened light.

"Upon leaving the gate and courtyard" means that having gained his favor, though close there is no danger; adapting to the times to evade disaster, one merely steps beyond the courtyard. Hence it says: "Upon leaving the gate and courtyard."

The Sub-commentary states: "Capturing the heart's intention" means that what is harbored in the heart does not oppose or offend, but accords with correctness; hence it says "capturing the heart's intention."
