Nine in the Second Place is firm and yang dwelling below, while Six in the Fifth Place is yin and yielding dwelling above. When firmness serves yielding, and yang follows yin, although there are times when it must be so, it is not the regular course of compliance.
For the dim to preside over the bright, and for the firm to serve the weak—if one merely labors reluctantly under the pressure of circumstances, it is not sincere submission. If the interaction between superior and subordinate is not through sincerity, how can it endure?
How can it accomplish anything? Although Six in the Fifth Place is yin and yielding, it dwells in the honorable position; Nine in the Second Place, though firm and yang, is one who serves superiors.
It ought to inwardly harbor utmost sincerity without relying on external ornamentation; when sincerity accumulates within, one naturally does not attend to external adornment. Hence it says, "It is advantageous to use the yue sacrifice," meaning it values sincerity and reverence.
Since antiquity, when a firm and strong minister serves a weak and yielding ruler, there has never been one who did not resort to dissimulation and artificiality. The yue is the simplest and plainest of sacrifices.
Saying "if there is sincerity" means that once there is sincerity, it is fitting not to use ornate decoration, but solely to move and connect with the superior through one's sincerity. Being like this, one attains freedom from blame.
As a firm and strong minister serving a weak and yielding ruler, and moreover in the time of Pushing Upward, unless they interact with sincere intent, how could he escape blame?

If Nine in the Second Place can serve the superior with trust and sincerity, then not only is the way of a minister free from blame, but he can also carry out the way of firm centrality, extending benefits to the world; this is "having joy."
Whenever the Commentary on the Images speaks of "having blessings," it means that by being like this, blessings and good fortune extend to other things; when it speaks of "having joy," it means that the matter is already good and moreover there is cause for joy.
Just as in The Taming Power of the Great, where "the headboard on a young bull brings supreme good fortune" and the Commentary on the Images says "there is joy," it is because placing a headboard on a young bull is easy and spares the difficulty of forceful restraint; this is having cause for joy.

Having correspondence with the fifth line, going forward it will surely be entrusted with office.
Embodying the virtue of firmness, it advances without seeking favoritism, warding off depravity to preserve sincerity, with its will set on the great enterprise; therefore it is advantageous to present simple sincerity to the bright spirits.

The Sub-commentary states: Nine in the Second Place has a correspondence with the fifth; going upward to the fifth, it will surely be trusted and employed, hence it says "sincerity."

Exercising its mind like this, it can then present its simple frugality to the bright spirits without blame; hence it says, "If there is sincerity, it is advantageous to use the yue sacrifice; no blame."
