I Ching casting

Occupying the bottom of the hexagram as a yin line, this position lacks the foundational strength to soar despite its distant connection to the fourth line.

Traditional divination reads the soaring bird as an emblem of reckless elevation, where acting ahead of one's capacity leads straight into adversity. Staying patient and establishing your footing will prevent the hazards of moving too soon.

Career

Early-career professionals or those newly assigned to a post should resist the urge to lead major initiatives before acquiring adequate experience. Classical workplace counsel indicates that overstepping your role invites preventable missteps and professional vulnerability.

Focusing on learning your craft and assisting senior colleagues builds the credibility you currently lack.

Love & relationships

Rushing a budding romance or demanding deep commitments prematurely creates unnecessary tension and emotional withdrawal. Traditional relationship guidance notes that forcing pace before genuine intimacy develops alienates the other party.

Allowing the connection to unfold naturally through low-pressure interactions protects its long-term potential.

Wealth

Venturing into unfamiliar investments or pursuing aggressive financial shortcuts carries substantial downside during this stage. Classical treatises caution that operating beyond your financial literacy invites rapid erosion of principal.

Protecting your current assets and avoiding speculative trends keeps your finances secure.

‘There is a bird flying (and ascending) till the result is evil:’—nothing can be done to avoid this issue.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Six at the Beginning is yin and yielding, responding above to Nine in the Fourth Place, and resides in a time of excess, ascending rather than descending.

The flying bird leaves its sound: it is not fitting to ascend, only fitting to descend; hence its image and omen are like this. In Guo Pu's Donglin, those who obtained this divination sometimes suffered afflictions from winged creatures.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Six at the Beginning is yin and yielding, dwelling below, which is the image of a petty person. Moreover, it responds above to the fourth line, and the fourth line belongs to the trigram of movement.

A petty person is restless and rash, and receiving assistance from above in what ought to be exceeded, he will surely exceed excessively; how much more so when he exceeds in what should not be exceeded! His excess is as swift as a flying bird; that is why it brings misfortune.

Being so rash and hasty, his transgression is swift and distant, beyond rescue or restraint.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

His transgression is as rapid as the swiftness of a flying bird: how could rescue or restraint be possible? Misfortune is only fitting; 'nothing can be done' means there is no place to exert effort.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

In Preponderance of the Small, ascending is contrary and descending is compliant. Responding to the upper trigram, it advances toward defiance and finds nowhere to set foot: this is the misfortune of the flying bird.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Sub-commentary: The meaning of Preponderance of the Small is that ascending is contrary while descending is compliant.

The initial line responds to the upper trigram, advancing toward defiance just like a flying bird finding nowhere to set its feet; hence it says: 'The flying bird brings misfortune.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

Sub-commentary: 'Nothing can be done about it': advancing toward defiance, who would have thought it would inevitably bring misfortune upon itself? What can possibly be done?

Yicuo JinLine statement

Six at the Beginning, first line, Lower-Lower: Things are not secure; the bridge is broken by men. Reorganize with care; curb your haughty mind.
