I Ching casting

Holding central and balanced yin energy, this line passes the grandfather to meet the grandmother and stops before reaching the ruler to work with the minister.

Traditional commentary commends this instinct for knowing one's operational place and avoiding inappropriate attempts to influence the very top. Exercising duty within your legitimate sphere ensures steady progress without generating conflict.

Career

Professional efficacy relies on solid collaboration with direct managers and peers rather than bypassing channels to reach executive leadership.

Classical administrative wisdom highlights that honoring organizational boundaries earns lasting trust from both superiors and colleagues. Concentrating on your immediate responsibilities reinforces your professional standing without making waves.

Love & relationships

Partnerships thrive when both individuals respect realistic boundaries and accept everyday circumstances rather than chasing idealized expectations. Traditional readings emphasize that content companionship in quiet moments forms a more durable bond than demanding perfection.

Appreciating ordinary gestures of support will keep your relationship deeply grounded.

Wealth

Financial stability comes from steady, predictable earnings and measured stewardship rather than attempting grand leaps in income. Classical financial logic holds that modest, reliable accumulations outperform high-stakes ventures outside your control.

Sticking to a balanced budget and living within your existing means ensures lasting security.

Line statement

2. The second line, divided, shows its subject passing by his grandfather, and meeting with his grandmother; not attempting anything against his ruler, but meeting him as his minister. There will be no error.

Small Image

‘He does not attempt to reach his ruler:’— a minister should not overpass the distance (between his ruler and himself).

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Six in the Second Place is yielding, compliant, central, and correct. Advancing, it passes the third and fourth lines and meets Six in the Fifth Place; this is passing over yang and instead meeting yin.

In doing so, it does not reach Six in the Fifth Place but finds its own proper allotment, which is failing to reach the ruler and chancing upon his minister.

Both embody the intention of exceeding without truly exceeding, preserving correctness and attaining the center—the path to freedom from blame; hence its image and omen are like this.

Zhouyi BenyiSmall Image

The reason it does not reach the ruler but returns to meet the minister is that a minister must not overstep his bounds.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The yang residing above is the image of a father; that which is more honored than a father is the image of an ancestor. The fourth line is above the third, hence it represents the ancestor.

The second and fifth lines reside in mutual correspondence, sharing the virtue of yielding centrality; their will does not follow the third and fourth lines, so the second passes the fourth and meets the fifth, which is passing by its ancestor.

The fifth line is yin yet honored, the image of an ancestral mother; it shares the same virtue and corresponds with the second. In other Guas, yin and yang seek each other; but in a time of excess, things must exceed their normal bounds, hence it is different.

When there is nothing that does not exceed, as the second follows the fifth it must also guard against excess.

'Not reaching its ruler, it meets its minister' means ascending without encroaching upon or rivaling the ruler, hitting upon the proper duty of a minister; then there is no blame. 'Yu' means to match fittingly.

If it exceeds the boundary of a minister, its blame can well be known.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

In a time of excess, nothing fails to exceed its normal bounds; therefore, in advancing upward, one is warned against reaching one's ruler. A minister must not exceed the bounds of a minister.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

To obtain something by passing beyond is called 'meeting.' In Preponderance of the Small, occupying the proper station, one obtains by passing beyond. 'Ancestor' means the beginning, referring to the initial line.

'Ancestral mother' refers to one who dwells within, treads the center, and is correct. Passing beyond the initial line and treading the second position, it is said to 'pass its ancestor' and 'meet its ancestral mother.'

Exceeding without going so far as to usurp, exhausting its role within the station of a minister: hence 'not reaching its ruler, it meets its minister, no blame.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Sub-commentary: To obtain something by passing beyond is called 'meeting.' Six in the Second Place is in Preponderance of the Small and occupies its proper station, which is obtaining by passing beyond. 'Ancestor' means the beginning, referring to the initial line.

'Ancestral mother' is the designation for a mother; Six in the Second Place dwells within, treads the center, and is correct, so it is called the ancestral mother. Having already passed the initial line, it is said to 'pass its ancestor.'

Treading in centrality and correctness, it is said to 'meet its ancestral mother.' Exceeding without reaching usurpation, fulfilling only its ministerial role, it says: 'Not reaching its ruler, it meets its minister, no blame.'

Sub-commentary: 'A minister must not exceed': a minister must not exceed his own position.
