I Ching casting

Positioned at the upper limit of the lower Fire trigram and shifting toward Hexagram 3 (Zhun, Difficulty at the Beginning), Line 3 achieves victory only through sustained, grueling effort.

The Xiaoxiang commentary emphasizes that three years of battle leaves vitality exhausted, warning against employing small-minded agents who merely exploit the aftermath.

Recognizing the heavy toll of past exertion prevents you from squandering remaining reserves on unnecessary battles.

Career

Bringing a major, high-stakes initiative across the finish line represents an undeniable milestone, yet the team is likely operating under severe fatigue.

Classical wisdom warns against immediately embarking on another high-risk venture or delegating crucial tasks to unreliable opportunists. Consolidating your operational foundation and allowing personnel to recharge is far wiser than pressing for endless conquests.

Love & relationships

Navigating long-standing relational conflicts or external pressures may have preserved the partnership, but emotional stamina is wearing thin. Continuing to debate minor grievances or allowing gossiping third parties to intervene will only fracture fragile goodwill.

Granting each other dedicated rest and quiet understanding is essential to repair emotional fatigue.

Wealth

A long-term enterprise or stubborn capital commitment may finally produce returns, but the accompanying carrying costs and stress have been substantial.

Protecting your capital now means avoiding speculative schemes and refusing to partner with unvetted promoters who promise effortless margins. Safeguarding remaining capital reserves takes strict precedence over pursuing aggressive new outlays.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

In a time of After Completion, occupying a firm position with firmness is the image of Gaozong attacking the Guifang. 'In three years he conquered it' means that only after a long time was victory won, warning the diviner not to act rashly.

'Inferior men should not be employed' follows the same divination rule as Six at the Top in Hexagram 7 (The Army).

Pronunciation: 'Bei' (exhaustion) is pronounced pu-bai.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Nine in the Third Place meets the time of After Completion by occupying a firm position with a firm line, which is the utmost use of firmness. Using firmness like this in After Completion is exemplified by Gaozong's campaign against the Guifang.

Gaozong was certainly King Wu Ding of Shang: when affairs under Heaven were already completed, he marched far to subdue violent rebellion. Extending awe-inspiring martial might with a heart set on rescuing the people is the enterprise of a true king.

Only a sage or worthy ruler can undertake it. If one merely unleashes martial might out of wrath against the unsubmissive or greed for land, one harms the people and indulges selfish desires. Therefore the warning is given: do not employ inferior men.

When inferior men undertake such a thing, they do so out of greed, anger, and private motives; without greed and wrath, none would willingly do it. 'In three years he conquered it' shows the extreme fatigue and weariness involved.

Because Nine in the Third Place uses firmness in a time of After Completion, the sage set forth this principle to show people a model and a warning—how could shallow minds ever grasp it?

Speaking of weariness demonstrates the supreme difficulty of the undertaking. When Gaozong undertakes it, it is permissible; but without Gaozong's heart, one acts out of greed and wrath, bringing disaster upon the people.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling in a time of After Completion, at the end of civilized clarity, and treading its Correct Position, this line is one who dwells at the end of decline yet is able to bring completion: 'Gaozong attacked the Guifang; in three years he conquered it.'

When a noble person dwells here, he brings revival; when an inferior man occupies it, he ruins the state.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Correct Meaning states: Regarding 'Gaozong attacked the Guifang; in three years he conquered it': Gaozong is the title of King Wu Ding of the Yin dynasty.

Nine in the Third Place dwells in a time of After Completion at the end of civilized clarity, treading its Correct Position; this is one who dwells in decline yet is capable of completion.

Gaozong campaigned against the Guifang to revive the Yin dynasty, an affair identical to this line, which is why the metaphor is drawn.

Gaozong's virtue was truly civilized and clear, yet the circumstances were thoroughly exhausted and weary, so victory could not be achieved immediately; only after three years did he conquer them. Hence it is said: 'Gaozong attacked the Guifang; in three years he conquered it.'

Regarding 'Inferior men should not be employed': since the situation is already enfeebled, if a noble person occupies it, he can establish merit and virtue, bringing revival and restoration; but if an inferior man occupies it, danger and disorder mount daily, inevitably ruining the state.

Hence it is said: 'Inferior men should not be employed.'

The Correct Meaning states: 'He was exhausted' means that owing to decline and exhaustion, it took three years to conquer it.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Nine in the Third Place, third line, upper-medium: To enter is easy, but to emerge is hard. Lingering weariness repeats again and again; beset from all sides, the mind can scarcely bear it.
