I Ching casting

In traditional commentary, Six at the third place is a yin line occupying a yang seat at the top of the lower trigram, neither central nor correct, resulting in the line judgment of bearing shame.

Its transformation into Hexagram 33 (Retreat) suggests that seeking illicit gains during times of general blockage only invites humiliation and reputational damage.

In plain terms, stepping away from dubious schemes and acknowledging your mistakes is the only way to prevent deeper dishonor.

Career

Within professional settings, this line points to awkward predicaments caused by backing the wrong faction or using shortcuts to secure a position beyond your current capability.

The commentary on the image emphasizes that an improper position cannot be sustained, meaning unearned authority will face internal skepticism and pushback. Put simply, disown questionable alliances and refocus on competent, honest work to repair your standing.

Love & relationships

In personal relationships, this position reflects unacknowledged pretenses, emotional dependency, or deceit that can no longer remain hidden. The illusion of harmony breaks down when one party relies on superficial vanity or hidden motives, exposing both sides to embarrassment.

In everyday terms, dropping the facade and facing the truth candidly is the only path to genuine emotional healing.

Wealth

Financially, this line highlights vulnerabilities arising from speculative shortcuts, questionable contracts, or seeking quick profits under cloudy conditions.

Attempting to mask mounting losses or participating in murky deals usually ends in contractual fallout or public embarrassment. In short, write off bad ventures immediately and clean up your balance sheet rather than trying to hide the deficits.

That ‘his shame is folded in his breast’ is owing to the inappropriateness of his position.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Being a yin line in a yang position, neither central nor correct, it is a small man who intends to harm the good but is unable to do so; hence it presents the image of harboring shame. However, because he has not yet acted, there is no caution of misfortune or blame.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Six in the Third Place, being yin and yielding, neither central nor correct, dwells in Standstill (Stagnation) and is in close proximity to the upper trigram.

Incapable of guarding the Way and accepting fate, in extremity he oversteps all bounds, embodying the extreme dispositions of a small man. What he harbors and schemes is depraved, reckless, and boundless, which is utterly shameful.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Yin and yielding, dwelling in Standstill without being central or correct, what he does is shameful because his position is improper. Dwelling in an improper position, his actions do not accord with the Way.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

All use the small man's way to compliantly serve those above, yet because the position is not proper, it brings 'harboring shame.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

Correct Meaning: As for "harboring shame," it means that the host of yin lines all use the small man's way to embrace and serve those above; because Six in the Third Place has lost its proper position, what it embraces and serves brings only shame and disgrace to itself.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Six in the Third Place, third line, lowest of the low: Neither trace nor shadow can be found, near and far it remains hard to seek. Storm clouds arise from level ground; what seemed a smile turns back to weeping.
