Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Biting dried meat is harder than biting skin, yet easier than biting dried cured meat or gristly meat. Yellow is the color of the center; metal also refers to thirty catties of metal.

Six in the fifth place is yielding, compliant, and central, occupying the honored position; when it inflicts punishment on people, none fail to submit, hence it has this image.

However, it must persevere in awareness of danger to attain freedom from blame; this is also a warning to the diviner.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

The reason it can be free from blame is that what it does attains appropriateness. What is called appropriateness means dwelling in the center and employing firmness while being able to maintain correctness and anticipate danger.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dried meat is tough. Yellow is the center. Metal is firmness. Being yin dwelling in a yang place, and yielding riding upon the firm, when it bites into things, they do not submit; hence it is said: "Biting into dried meat."

Yet dwelling in the honored position, being yielding and riding on the firm while occupying the center, it is able to execute punishments. Treading without correctness and yet able to execute punishments means firmness prevails.

Though in biting they do not submit, it attains the center and prevails; hence it says "biting into dried meat, he obtains yellow gold."

Though it is not correct in position, its punishments and executions are appropriate; therefore, although it must "persevere in awareness of danger," it is "free from blame."

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

From "The Image says" to "Persevering in awareness of danger, no blame." Correct Meaning: Regarding "Biting into dried meat": dried meat is tough.

Being yin in a yang place and yielding riding upon the firm, when using this to punish people's crimes, people do not submit, just like "biting into dried meat." "Obtains yellow gold": yellow is the center; metal is firmness.

Dwelling in the center is yellow; "yielding riding on the firm" is metal. Being central and practicing firmness, "it can execute punishments, and firmness prevails." Hence it says "obtains yellow gold."

"Persevering in awareness of danger, no blame": though oneself is not correct, punishments and executions are appropriate; thus, though keeping correct and maintaining self-vigilance, there is no blame or harm.

Though the position is not correct, the administration of punishment is appropriate; hence the Image says "attains appropriateness."
