Classical commentary

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Occupying the third place with a Six line, it attains neither centrality nor correctness and ought to incur remorse and blame. Yet the third line is atop the compliant trigram, the extreme of compliance.

All three Yin lines are compliantly following the superior; this shows that the third line's compliance with the superior shares the same will as the multitude. Trusted and followed by the multitude, its remorse therefore disappears.

Having the will to compliantly follow the superior and head toward brightness, with the multitude trusting and following it, what would not be advantageous? Someone might ask: Without following centrality and correctness, can being in accord with the multitude still be good?

I reply: That which the multitude trusts must be supremely fitting; how much more so when compliantly following the great brightness above—how could it not be good? Therefore remorse disappears, meaning the error of lacking centrality and correctness vanishes.

The ancients said: 'When counsel accords with the multitude, it joins with the mind of Heaven.'
