Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Yi is pronounced as yi [yǐ]. Chuan is pronounced as shi and zhuan in reverse [chuán]; the fourth line is the same.

Nine at the Beginning encounters the time of decreasing the lower to increase the upper, corresponding above to the yin of Six in the Fourth Place.

Ceasing what one is doing and hastening thither to increase it is the way to be without blame; hence its image and divination are like this. However, dwelling below to increase the upper, one must also weigh the depth and shallowness.

Shang (esteem) is interchangeable with shang (upward).

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The meaning of Decrease is to decrease the firm to increase the yielding, to decrease the lower to increase the upper.

Nine at the Beginning, being firm and yang, corresponds to the fourth; Six in the Fourth Place, being yielding and yin, occupies a superior position, relying on the increase from the initial line.

For the lower to increase the upper, one should decrease oneself without claiming merit for oneself; once the affair that benefits the superior is finished, one should depart swiftly without lingering upon one's merit—only then is there no blame.

If one enjoys the glory of successful achievement, that is not decreasing oneself to increase the upper; in the conduct of a subordinate, it incurs blame.

The yin-yielding Fourth relies upon the initial line, and thus listens to it; Nine at the Beginning should weigh what is appropriate and decrease itself to increase the fourth—neither excess nor deficiency is acceptable.

'Shang' means above. What the time honors is taken as esteemed. What the initial line esteems is uniting its will with the upper. The fourth relies upon the initial, and the initial increases the fourth, uniting its will with the upper.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

The way of Decrease is 'decreasing the lower to increase the upper,' decreasing the firm to increase the yielding, in order to respond to its time. Dwelling at the lowest extreme, decreasing firmness to serve yielding, one must not be idle.

Being at the beginning of Decrease, one must not become complacent; once the business is done, one should go swiftly, not daring to rest in leisurely ease—only then does one obtain 'no blame.'

Using firmness to serve yielding, though one avoids blame, intimacy is not yet achieved. Therefore, after obtaining no blame, one must further 'weigh the decrease' to achieve 'united will.' Chuan means swiftly.

Esteeming the union of wills, one desires to go swiftly.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Sub-commentary states: Regarding 'When the business is done, going swiftly brings no blame': yi means finished; chuan means swiftly. The way of Decrease is 'decreasing the lower to increase the upper,' like a subject wishing to decrease himself to serve the sovereign.

Yet each has his own duties; if one abandons one's duties to go, no blame could be greater. If one finishes the business and does not go, that would be arrogance.

Finishing the business and going swiftly brings freedom from blame; hence it says, 'When the business is done, going swiftly brings no blame.'

Regarding 'Weighing the decrease': if firmness prevails, yielding is endangered; serving yielding with firmness, intimacy is not seen at first. Therefore one must weigh and decrease it, and only then attain 'united will'; hence it says, 'Weighing the decrease.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

The Sub-commentary states: Regarding 'Esteeming the union of wills': shang means hoping for. The reason one finishes business and goes swiftly is hoping to unite one's will with the upper.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Nine at the Beginning, first line, Lower-Middle: Joy upon joy upon joy, yet beware of Standstill (Stagnation) in the end. Having gained the pearl from beneath the black dragon's chin, suddenly it is lost and sinks back into the water.
