Classical commentary

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The fifth line, possessing yang firmness and central correctness, occupies the position of honor. Its talent and virtue are completely good and completely beautiful; this is 'the well is clear; a cold spring to drink from.' 'Clear' (lie) means sweet and pure.

The spring of a well considers coolness its excellence; a cold spring that is sweet and pure can be drunk by people. In the way of The Well, this is the utmost good. Yet the text does not say 'auspicious' because The Well achieves success only when water emerges at the top.

Since it has not yet reached the top, it has not yet come into use; therefore, only upon reaching the top is it spoken of as 'supreme good fortune.'

That a cold spring can be drunk from is the utmost good in the way of The Well. The virtue of Nine in the Fifth Place, being central and correct, embodies the meaning of the utmost good.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

'Lie' means pure. Occupying the Central Position and attaining correctness, its substance is firm and unbending. It does not partake of what is unrighteous; it is central, correct, noble, and pure. Therefore, only after 'the well is clear, with a cold spring' is it 'drunk from.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Correct Meaning states: The other lines do not occupy the noble position; they merely cultivate virtue to await being employed. Nine in the Fifth Place is the lord of the Gua, selecting people and putting them to use. 'Lie' means pure.

Nine in the Fifth Place occupies the Central Position and attains correctness, and its substance is firm and upright. Having a substance that is firm and upright, it will not drink foulness; it requires that the well be pure with a cold spring, and only then drinks from it.

This signifies that a firm and upright lord does not admit those who are not worthy; only when one's conduct is pure and talent is elevated will they be employed. Therefore, it is said: 'The well is clear; a cold spring to drink from.'

The Correct Meaning states: As for being 'central and correct,' if one did not occupy the Central Position and attain correctness, one would employ those who are not worthy, and could not demand to wait for a cold spring before drinking.

That it must speak of a 'cold spring' is because being clear and cold is the original nature of water; only upon encountering external things does it become turbid and warm. Hence, speaking of a cold spring expresses its purity.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Nine in the Fifth Place, fifth line, Upper-Middle: Excellence lies in sweetness; sweetness has fragrance. There is an end to what begins; there is a beginning to what ends.
