I Ching casting

Occupying a correct yin position at the base of the upper water trigram, this line focuses entirely on masonry and internal restoration.

The traditional commentary observes that halting water extraction to tile the well shafts carries no blame, as structural upkeep prevents future collapse. To put it simply, this is a necessary maintenance phase where stepping back to fix internal flaws protects future progress.

Career

Operational workflows, organizational systems, or personal skill sets are entering a vital recalibration window where aggressive expansion should yield to consolidation.

Classical insight emphasizes that pausing active output to patch systemic weaknesses or update core processes averts costly failures down the line. In plain terms, focus on refining your infrastructure and internal methods now so you can operate smoothly later.

Love & relationships

Relational dynamics may feel quiet or routine, but this quiet interval offers a valuable chance to repair underlying miscommunications and clarify mutual expectations.

Rather than chasing emotional intensity, both individuals benefit from addressing small domestic or logistical frictions that have created subtle strain. In short, strengthening daily respect and mutual boundaries will fortify the partnership against future misunderstandings.

Wealth

This stage calls for a defensive audit of financial structures, focusing on budget leakages, debt management, and internal record-keeping. The classical symbolism of lining the well highlights containment and capital preservation over aggressive investment or speculation.

Bottom line, tightening up spending leaks and securing existing reserves will keep your balance sheet resilient.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Zhou is pronounced with falling tone. Six in the Fourth Place, though holding its correct position, is yin and soft without a spring; it can only repair and line the well, without the merit of reaching things. Hence its image is lining the well, and its divination is no blame.

If the diviner can cultivate and repair himself, then though he lacks the merit of reaching things, he can still be free of blame.

Zhouyi BenyiSmall Image

Lie is pronounced lie. Lie means pure and clear. Firm, yang, central, and correct, its merit reaches things, hence this image. If the diviner possesses its virtue, he accords with its image.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Though Six in the Fourth Place is yin and soft, it occupies a correct position and supports the ruler Nine in the Fifth Place above. Its talent is insufficient to bestow wide benefits upon things, yet it can preserve itself; hence, by repairing and lining, it attains no blame.

Zhou means laying bricks, referring to repair. Though the fourth line's talent is weak and cannot widely accomplish the work of aiding things, repairing its affairs so they do not fall into ruin is acceptable.

If it cannot repair and abandons the work of nourishing people, it loses the Dao of the well, and its blame would be great.

Occupying a high position and finding a firm, yang, central, and correct ruler, if it can dwell in correctness, serve the superior, and not abandon its duties, it can avoid blame.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Zhou means repairing the well. Though unable to magnify the achievement of aiding things, it can repair without letting things fall into neglect; hence it is without blame.

It barely escapes blame; if it were firm and yang, it would not stop at this, and stopping at this would be blameworthy.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Attaining its position without resonance, preserving itself yet unable to supply above, it can only repair the well's collapses and mend its faults.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Sub-commentary states: As for 'Six in the Fourth Place: lining the well, no blame,' Zixia's Commentary states: 'Lining also means repairing; laying bricks to repair a well's collapse is called lining.'

Six in the Fourth Place attains its position without resonance, merely preserving itself and unable to supply above, but able to repair the well's collapse. Applied to human affairs, one can cultivate virtue and mend faults; hence: 'lining the well, no blame.'

The Sub-commentary states: As for 'repairing the well,' it can only repair the well's collapses, but cannot yet supply upward to nourish people.
