I Ching casting

Occupying the base of the lower fire trigram without a formal correspondent in the fourth place, this initial yang line possesses revolutionary zeal but lacks the maturity and standing to act.

The line text counsels binding oneself with the hide of a yellow ox, an image reinforced by the Small Image commentary emphasizing that no undertaking should yet be launched. Restraining impulse and consolidating your personal strength is the wisest course until conditions ripen.

Career

Although structural flaws in your workplace may be painfully obvious, your current leverage and administrative backing remain insufficient to force reform.

Championing radical initiatives prematurely will only trigger backlash from entrenched stakeholders and compromise your position. Focus on excelling within your current responsibilities rather than attempting to overhaul the broader system.

Love & relationships

A romantic bond in its formative or tentative phase cannot yet bear the pressure of radical demands or hurried milestones. Following the principle of quiet endurance, cultivating gentle consistency and understanding builds a far stronger foundation than hasty declarations.

Giving the relationship ample time to develop naturally safeguards it against unnecessary friction.

Wealth

Enticing market trends or aggressive investment strategies carry hidden hazards when personal reserves and due diligence are not yet fully solidified. Classical asset prudence advises securing your capital core and resisting speculative maneuvers during times of uncertainty.

Protecting your principal assets right now is vastly superior to chasing speculative gains.

‘He is bound with (the skin of) a yellow ox:’—he should in his circumstances be taking action.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

'Gong' is pronounced jiu-yong fan. Although it is the time of Revolution, dwelling at the beginning without resonance means one cannot yet act; hence this image is given. 'Gong' means to secure. Yellow is the color of the center; the ox is an obedient creature.

Hide (ge) is used to bind things; it borrows the name of the hexagram, yet its meaning is different. The divination indicates that one should firmly and steadfastly hold fast, and must not take action. The sages were this cautious regarding revolution and transformation.

Six in the Second Place is yielding, obedient, central, and correct, serving as the lord of civilized brilliance with resonance above; here one can indeed reform. Yet only on one's own day should one reform, so that advancing brings good fortune and no blame.

This warns the diviner that one must not change hastily.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Revolution is a major affair; it must have the right time, the right position, and the right talent. Only after careful consideration and prudent action can there be no regret.

Regarding the ninth line: by time, it is at the beginning, and moving at the start of affairs lacks the sense of prudence, presenting an image of rash haste; by position, it is at the bottom, and lacking the time and support while stirring from below incurs the blame of overstepping, lacking the weight of authority; by talent, it belongs to the Li body and is yang—the nature of Li is to ascend and the nature of yang firmness is vigorous, both being swift to move.

With such talent, taking action brings misfortune and blame. For being firm without centrality and rash in disposition, what it lacks are centrality and compliance. One should secure oneself with centrality and compliance and refrain from reckless movement; then it will be well.

'Gong' means to bind. Hide is used to bundle and bind. Yellow is the color of the center; the ox is an obedient creature. 'Secured with the hide of a yellow ox' means securing oneself through the way of centrality and compliance without moving recklessly.

Why does it not speak of good fortune or misfortune? It is said: Reckless action brings misfortune and blame; securing oneself through centrality and compliance simply means not reforming—how could good fortune or misfortune already appear?

The Image says: 'Secured with the hide of a yellow ox': one cannot take action. Because Nine at the Beginning's time, position, and talent all preclude action, one should secure oneself with centrality and compliance.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

At the beginning of Revolution, the way of revolution is not yet accomplished. Holding fast to the constant center, one cannot yet adapt to change. Here one can maintain the established state, but cannot take action. 'Gong' means to secure. 'Yellow' is the center.

The hide of an ox is tough and cannot be altered. What is used to secure oneself is the constant center, firm and unwilling to change.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Correct Meaning states: 'Gong' means to secure. 'Yellow' is the center. Ox hide is the skin of an ox.

The meaning of 'Ge' is change and reform, yet animal skin is called 'ge' (leather/hide) because the skins of birds and beasts can all 'undergo change'; hence it is used as a metaphor. Although skin is something that undergoes tanning, ox hide is tough and difficult to change.

Nine at the Beginning is at the start of Revolution, when the way of revolution is not yet accomplished; holding fast to the constant center, it cannot yet adapt to change.

Applied to affairs, it is like using ox hide to secure oneself, unwilling to adapt rashly to change; hence it is said: 'Secured with the hide of a yellow ox.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

The Correct Meaning states: 'One cannot take action' means that 'action' refers to adapting to the changes of the time and undertaking something. Since one endures firmly to secure oneself, one can maintain constancy, but 'cannot take action.'

Yicuo JinLine statement

Nine at the Beginning, initial line, Lower-Middle: The intent wanders, yet the heart does not wander; affairs are broad, yet the heart is not at ease. If you wish to know the true outcome of the matter, two ranges of mountains still stand between.
