I Ching casting

Transcending the active duties of the hexagram, this upper yang line flies beyond the earthly realm, where its feathers are collected to adorn ceremonial rites and inspire future generations.

The classical reading pronounces great fortune because its loftiness establishes an unshakeable pattern, which the Xiao Xiang commentary emphasizes can never be thrown into disorder.

Transforming into Hexagram 39 (Obstacle) serves as a subtle reminder that staying above petty strife requires continuous moral discipline rather than careless indulgence.

In plain terms, rising above petty squabbles lets your reputation and example guide others with effortless authority.

Career

Your professional standing has reached a level of senior mastery or emeritus influence where day-to-day tactical turf wars no longer apply. Colleagues and industry peers look to your conduct, standards, and ethical framework as a benchmark for sound practice.

Mentoring others and upholding institutional standards yields far greater lasting impact than chasing immediate promotional wins. Setting a dignified example elevates your reputation far beyond ordinary office politics.

Love & relationships

The relationship has matured into a spiritual camaraderie marked by mutual respect, gracious manners, and deep philosophical alignment. Having transcended petty squabbles and territorial disputes, the partnership serves as an inspiring example of mutual honor to those around you.

The classical image of ritual beauty mirrors an emotional bond founded on deep courtesy and unspoken understanding. A mature union grounded in mutual dignity brings peace that outlasts everyday turbulence.

Wealth

Material security has reached a stage where wealth serves broader cultural, philanthropic, or generational purposes rather than mere consumption.

Detachment from speculative turbulence allows for thoughtful estate planning, charitable contributions, and long-range legacy building. The emphasis shifts toward orderly stewardship and preserving core values rather than aggressively pursuing marginal yields.

Using your resources to support meaningful enduring values brings genuine lasting satisfaction.

Line statement

6. The sixth line, undivided, shows the geese gradually advanced to the large heights (beyond). Their feathers can be used as ornaments. There will be good fortune.

Small Image

‘Their feathers can be used as ornaments. There will be good fortune:’—(the object and character of the subject of the line) cannot be disturbed.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiSmall Image

Advancing gradually higher and higher yet without becoming useless, its aspiration is lofty and outstanding; how could it ever be thrown into confusion?

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Lord Hu of Anding took 'land' as 'cloud-way.' 'Kui' is the path of the clouds, meaning within the open void. The Erya says: 'A road extending in nine directions is called a kui.' 'Kui' bears the meaning of being unimpeded, open, and unblocked.

Nine at the Top is at the highest position and advances further upward, thus stepping beyond the realm of human rank. In other times this would be an excess, but in the time of Gradual Progress, dwelling at the extreme of Xun, there is necessarily an orderly sequence.

It is like the wild goose leaving its resting place to soar into the cloud-filled void; in human terms, this is transcending ordinary worldly affairs. Advancing to such a point without losing gradual order is the lofty attainment of the worthy and eminent.

Therefore, its feathers can be used for ceremonial ornamentation, bringing good fortune. Feathers are what the wild goose uses to advance; using what it employs to advance illustrates the Dao by which Nine at the Top advances.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

The noble person advances from below to above, from the subtle to the manifest, and whether taking a single step or acting in haste, everything proceeds in orderly sequence. Not losing this sequence, there is nowhere one does not obtain good fortune.

Therefore, although the ninth line reaches the height of extremity, it does not lose its good fortune. That its feathers can be used for ceremonial ornamentation is because it possesses an order that cannot be thrown into confusion.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Advancing to dwell in lofty purity, unencumbered by worldly rank, nothing can bend its heart or disorder its will. Lofty, pure, and far-reaching, its demeanor is worthy of esteem; hence it says, 'Its feathers can be used for ceremonial ornamentation; good fortune.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Rectified Meaning: 'The wild goose gradually draws near the dry land'—both Nine at the Top and Line Three dwell at the top of their trigrams, so both are referred to as 'land.'

Nine at the Top occupies the ultimate summit; this is 'advancing to dwell in lofty purity,' hence it says, 'The wild goose gradually draws near the dry land.'

'Its feathers can be used for ceremonial ornamentation; good fortune'—yet it dwells in a place without rank, meaning it is 'unencumbered by worldly rank.'

Dwelling high yet able not to burden itself with rank, its feathers can serve as ceremonial emblems and standards for all beings, worthy of honor and emulation; hence it says, 'Its feathers can be used for ceremonial ornamentation; good fortune.'

That it must speak of 'feathers' is because, having used the wild goose to illustrate gradual progress, it uses the feathers to manifest the ritual demeanor.

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

Rectified Meaning: 'It cannot be thrown into disorder' means that by 'advancing to dwell in lofty purity, unencumbered by worldly rank,' nothing can disturb its will.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Nine at the Top, six lines, middle-middle: The intent seems confused, but the heart is not; matters seem relaxed, yet the mind is not at ease. A joyful gathering of double blessings; before long, one passes through the heavy gates.
