The reason Enthusiasm becomes Enthusiasm is due to Nine in the Fourth Place. It is the master of movement; when it moves, all the yin lines joyfully comply, which is the meaning of Enthusiasm.
The fourth line is the position of a great minister; the ruler at Six in the fifth place complies with it.
Bearing the affairs of the superior with yang firmness is that whence Enthusiasm arises; hence it says 'the origin of enthusiasm: great attainment,' meaning it is able to execute its will on a grand scale to bring about enthusiasm for all under Heaven.
'Doubt not; friends will gather like a hairpin clasp' means that the fourth line occupies the position of a great minister, serving a yielding and weak ruler and undertaking the burdens of all under Heaven—a position of peril and suspicion.
Alone shouldering the superior's trust while lacking the aid of like-virtued peers below, suspicion naturally arises. It must only exhaust its supreme sincerity without doubt or hesitation, and then associates and peers will naturally gather together.
To secure the trust of superiors and inferiors, nothing surpasses supreme sincerity. If one exhausts supreme sincerity, why worry about lacking assistance? '簪' means to gather; the name of the hairpin derives from its gathering of hair.
Someone may ask: 'The hexagram has only a single yang line; how can it obtain the aid of like-minded virtue?'
The answer is: Dwelling in a high position and seeking assistance with supreme sincerity, one will certainly obtain it by natural principle; this is like Nine in the Fifth Place of Coming to Meet: 'there is a falling from heaven.'
The fourth line, with yang firmness, presses close to the ruler's throne and takes exclusive charge of Enthusiasm. The sage should have cautioned it, yet did not, because Enthusiasm is the way of harmonious compliance.
Arising from the way of harmonious compliance, it does not lose the correctness of a minister.
Acting thus to take charge of Enthusiasm is simply to shoulder the affairs of all under Heaven and bring the times into enthusiasm; therefore, it is cautioned solely to maintain supreme sincerity without doubt.
