I Ching casting

Positioned at the apex of the active thunder trigram, this yin line is pushed into perpetual restlessness rather than centered constancy. The classical Xiang commentary cautions that continual agitation at the summit produces great failure without lasting merit.

In plain terms, shifting directions out of sheer impatience burns through vital energy without delivering anything of value.

Career

Within a business or career context, this line highlights the peril of changing strategic goals too frequently due to underlying anxiety.

When leadership continuously pivots without allowing existing plans time to mature, teams suffer from operational burnout and lack of coherent direction.

In plain terms, resist the temptation to overhaul your plans every few weeks and give your current initiatives time to take root.

Love & relationships

In personal relationships, this placement points to emotional volatility and overreacting to minor frictions. Constantly questioning the strength of a bond or stirring up drama out of restlessness will gradually erode mutual trust.

In plain terms, quiet your internal anxieties and offer your partner steady reassurance rather than creating unnecessary conflict.

Wealth

Financial decisions risk being derailed by erratic moves, such as overtrading or impulsively chasing short-term market fads. The resulting transaction friction and emotional turbulence often erode capital reserves without building sustainable value.

In plain terms, step back from impulsive adjustments and protect your existing holdings by practicing calm restraint.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Shaking means swift movement. Six at the Top occupies the extreme of Duration and the end of Zhen. When duration reaches its extreme, it lacks constancy; when Zhen reaches its end, movement is excessive.

Moreover, being yielding yin, it cannot hold steadfastly, and dwelling at the top is not its peaceful place; hence it presents the image of 'shaking duration,' and its divination is misfortune.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Six occupies the extreme of Duration at the end of Zhen. When duration reaches its extreme, it loses constancy; when Zhen reaches its end, movement reaches its peak.

Occupying the top with yin is not a position of rest, and yielding yin cannot hold fast—all of which carry the meaning of inconstancy. Hence it is 'shaking duration,' taking shaking as constancy.

Shaking means moving swiftly, like shaking clothes or shaking dust from books, conveying the sense of bustling, restless motion. Dwelling at the top with unmeasured movement, taking this as duration—misfortune is only natural.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

The way of dwelling at the top requires enduring virtue to achieve merit; if one is restless and inconstant, how could one accomplish anything? Dwelling at the top without constancy brings grave misfortune.

The Commentary on the Images further states that it cannot establish anything, hence 'greatly lacking in achievement.'

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Stillness is the ruler of restlessness; tranquility is the master of movement. Therefore tranquility is where the superior dwells, and stillness is the way that can endure.

Dwelling at the top of the hexagram, residing at the extreme of movement, taking this as duration—nowhere can it be applied with success.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Correct meaning: 'Shaking duration: misfortune.' Shaking means moving. Whoever dwells above should preserve stillness to govern movement. Now Six at the Top dwells at the summit of Duration and the extreme of movement, taking shaking as duration; this is why it brings misfortune.

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

Correct meaning: 'Greatly lacking in achievement' means that dwelling above and taking shaking movement as duration gains nothing wherever applied; hence 'greatly lacking in achievement.'
