32. Duration (恒)

Line 1

If this line changes it transforms into 34. The Power of the Great (大壮)

Modern reading

Line 1 warns against demanding deep, mature permanence right at the very outset before foundational roots have formed. Classical readings note that digging too deeply too soon invites adversity, because forcing premature results destabilizes early beginnings.

I Ching casting

Occupying the lowest yin position, this line errs by attempting to grasp advanced stability before establishing rudimentary familiarity.

The line text warns that seeking depth prematurely turns correctness into misfortune, as unnatural haste burns through resources before genuine cohesion can develop.

In plain terms, rushing to lock down a lifelong outcome before you have built the basics will only undermine your progress.

Career

Entering a new professional environment requires humble observation and gradual integration rather than immediate demands for high status or sweeping authority.

Overpromising grand long-term deliverables to impress leadership often exposes early skill gaps and creates avoidable friction. In plain terms, concentrate on mastering your entry-level duties before trying to reshape the organization.

Love & relationships

Early-stage romantic interactions suffer when one party aggressively demands definitive commitments or excessive emotional intimacy before mutual understanding exists.

Pressuring a developing connection with premature expectations creates claustrophobia and pushes potential partners away. In plain terms, allow attraction to unfold at its own pace instead of asking for forever on the first few dates.

Wealth

Financial decisions are susceptible to high-yield promises that require locking up liquidity in unproven or overly complex long-term vehicles. The transformed hexagram Dazhuang indicates that pushing forward with premature force risks costly setbacks.

In plain terms, keep your capital accessible and avoid committing funds to ambitious long-range schemes before verifying their safety.

Line statement

1. The first line, divided, shows its subject deeply (desirous) of long continuance. Even with firm correctness there will be evil; there will be no advantage in any way.

Small Image

‘The evil attached to the deep desire for long continuance (in the subject of the first line)’ arises from the deep seeking for it at the commencement (of things).

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

The initial line and the fourth line are proper complements; this is the normal principle. Yet the initial line sits at the bottom and in the beginning, where it should not seek deeply.

The fourth line is of the Zhen trigram body, whose yang nature ascends rather than descends, and it is moreover blocked by the second and third lines; its intention toward corresponding with the initial line is far from normal.

The yielding obscurity of the initial line cannot gauge the situation, and occupying the bottom of Xun as the lord of Xun, its nature is bent on penetrating; thus it seeks deeply according to constant principle—this is the image of 'delving into duration.'

For the diviner, acting like this brings misfortune even if steadfast, and there is no advantage whatsoever.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The initial line dwells at the bottom, and the fourth line is its proper complement. A yielding and obscure person can abide by constancy but cannot gauge the situation.

The fourth line is of the Zhen body with yang nature, occupying a high position with firmness; its will ascends and does not descend, and it is moreover blocked by the second and third lines, so its intention toward responding to the initial line is far from ordinary.

Yet the initial line seeks and expects deeply from it; this is knowing constancy but not knowing change. 'Delving' means deepening. 'Delving into duration' means seeking duration too deeply.

Holding to constancy without gauging the situation, seeking and expecting deeply from the superior, and clinging obstinately to this—this is the way to misfortune. Being so rigidly bound to constancy brings no advantage wherever one goes.

In the world, those who make excessive demands on long-standing relations and thereby incur regret and blame are all guilty of delving into duration.

Since its will seeks deeply from the superior, it cannot remain peacefully in its place; being yielding and petty and unable to rest in its place is also a way that brings misfortune.

In all hexagrams, the beginning and end represent places of shallowness and depth, insignificance and flourishing; being at the bottom and seeking deeply shows an ignorance of the times.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

Dwelling at the beginning of Duration and expecting deeply from the superior shows an extreme of knowing constancy while failing to gauge the situation; this is why it brings misfortune. Being yin and obscure, it fails to attain what is appropriate for Duration.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Occupying the beginning of Duration, it sits at the very bottom of the hexagram, seeking depth right at the start.

To seek depth and exhaust the bottom leaves things with no reserves; even if one arrived at this gradually, things could hardly bear it, how much less when seeking depth right at the beginning!

Taking this as duration brings misfortune, harming correctness and damaging virtue; there is nowhere it can be applied with advantage.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

'Six at the Beginning: Delving into duration. Steadfastness brings misfortune. Nothing is advantageous.' Correct meaning: 'Delving' means deep. It occupies the very bottom of the hexagram, hence it is called 'deep.' 'Delving into duration' means taking depth as duration.

Applied to benevolence and righteousness, one never tires of depth; applied to correctness, it means seeking into the feelings of things too deeply, which is a harmful correctness that damages virtue, advantageous in no application. Thus it says: 'Delving into duration.

Steadfastness brings misfortune. Nothing is advantageous.'

Commenting on the note 'occupying the beginning of Duration' to 'damaging virtue, advantageous in no application': occupying the beginning of the hexagram, it is called the start; being at the very bottom, it is called deep.

The reason misfortune is incurred is because it seeks depth right at the start.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Six at the Beginning, the initial line, lowest-low: The moon in the deep pool, a shadow in the bright mirror. All turns to empty nothingness, falsely delivering tidings.
