I Ching casting

In the structural mechanics of the hexagram, a yang line occupies a yin place at the base of the upper thunder trigram, indicating high activity without the proper foundation or resources.

The traditional line statement of 'no game in the field' warns that dogged persistence in an unfruitful environment brings zero harvest. In plain terms, working hard in the wrong direction will not produce results, so reevaluate your placement before continuing.

Career

Professional energy may currently be poured into an exhausted initiative or an organization where growth channels have completely dried up. Classical tradition notes that remaining out of alignment exhausts talent without leaving tangible achievements behind.

In plain terms, do not double down on a barren project when stepping away to find a fitting platform is what actually serves you.

Love & relationships

In interpersonal dynamics, this line reflects unilateral efforts delivered in ways or places where the partner cannot receive them. Persisting in mismatched emotional habits tends to create mutual fatigue rather than genuine closeness.

In plain terms, pay attention to what your partner actually needs instead of exhausting yourself on gestures that miss the mark.

Wealth

Financial initiatives may be tied to dormant assets or stagnant sectors where capital velocity remains stubbornly low.

With the transformed hexagram pointing toward Ascending (Hexagram 46), progress requires aligning with genuine upward momentum rather than defending barren holdings.

In plain terms, keeping funds locked in unproductive ventures only drains resources, so redirect your focus toward viable opportunities.

(Going) for long to what is not his proper place, how can he get game?

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Occupying a yin position with a yang line, it has long been out of its proper position; hence this image is formed. For the diviner, hunting yields no catch, and in all matters one fails to obtain what one seeks.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Occupying a yin position with a yang line, it dwells out of its proper place; dwelling out of its proper place, what benefit is there even if one endures?

What a person does, if it accords with the Way, will succeed through duration; if it does not accord with the Way, what benefit is there in duration?

Hence hunting is taken as a metaphor: Nine dwelling in the fourth line, even if enduring long, is like hunting without catching any birds or beasts, meaning that one exerts effort in vain without achievement.

Dwelling out of one's proper position, what can one obtain even after a long time? Hunting is used as a metaphor, hence it says: 'How could one obtain game?'

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Persisting in what is not one's proper position, though one toils, there is no gain.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Correct meaning: Hunting is an analogy for engaging in affairs. 'No game' means hunting without catch, an analogy for being active without achievement. 'Persisting in what is not one's proper position,' so toiling brings no reward.

Correct meaning: Having duration while losing position is 'long being out of one's proper position.' Hunting without catch is 'how could one obtain game?'
