I Ching casting

Standing at the crest of the inner trigram with excessive yang force, this line displays an unstable temperament that fails to sustain its virtuous intentions.

Traditional teachings emphasize that without inner constancy, external respect vanishes and unfavorable results accumulate rapidly. In plain terms, erratic shifts in attitude will cost you credibility, so make reliability your foremost priority.

Career

Professional reputation suffers when sudden mood swings, shifting priorities, and half-finished initiatives replace dependable execution. Frequently abandoning projects or reversing public commitments erodes the confidence of colleagues and clients alike.

In plain terms, choose a clear direction and stick with it through completion instead of jumping impulsively between tasks.

Love & relationships

Romantic relationships are strained when emotional volatility and inconsistent behavior leave a partner uncertain of where they stand. Swinging between intense affection and sudden detachment exhausts goodwill and ultimately drives genuine companions away.

In plain terms, offer your partner predictable, reliable care, as emotional inconsistency will quickly damage mutual trust.

Wealth

Financial management is hampered by reactive habits, such as chasing short-term market momentum and repeatedly altering investment criteria out of restlessness.

The transformed hexagram Xie suggests the need to release erratic behaviors and simplify your operational methods before capital is squandered. In plain terms, stop switching strategies on a whim and adhere strictly to a clear, disciplined financial routine.

Line statement

3. The third line, undivided, shows one who does not continuously maintain his virtue. There are those who will impute this to him as a disgrace. However firm he may be, there will be ground for regret.

Small Image

‘He does not continuously maintain his virtue:’—nowhere will he be borne with.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Although the position is correct, it is excessively firm and not central; its will follows the line above and cannot endure long in its place. Hence it presents the image of 'not enduring in one's virtue; someone may offer shame.'

The word 'someone' indicates not knowing who the person is. 'To offer' means to present; this means anyone may come and present it, with no one knowing whence it comes.

'Steadfastness brings distress' means that being rigid without constancy is shameful and distressing, serving as a reiterated warning to the diviner.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The third line is yang occupying a yang position, which is its proper place and should be its constant dwelling. Yet its will follows Six at the Top: not only is there the resonance of yin and yang, but wind also follows thunder.

Dwelling where it should endure, yet failing to dwell—this is an inconstant person. When one's virtue lacks constancy, shame and disgrace may be presented. 'Someone may offer it' means it arrives from time to time.

'Steadfastness brings distress': obstinately holding to inconstancy and taking it as constancy—how could that not be shameful and distressing?

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

When a person lacks constancy, where can he find acceptance? Failing to endure where one ought to dwell, and dwelling where one has no ground—how could one endure? An inconstant person finds nowhere to shelter his body.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Situated in the middle of the three yang lines, dwelling at the top of the lower trigram and below the upper trigram, it does not reach honor above nor humility below; its center is not in the trigram body.

The hexagram body is in Duration, yet its station has no fixed place; it is one without constancy. When virtuous conduct lacks constancy, self-contradiction arises, beyond all cross-examination; hence 'someone may offer shame.'

If one extends virtue like this, no one will accept it; it is mean and base in the extreme, hence called 'steadfastness brings distress.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

'Nine in the Third Place: Not enduring in virtue, someone may offer shame. Steadfastness brings distress.'

Correct meaning: Nine in the Third Place dwells above the lower trigram and below the upper trigram; although it sits in the middle of three yang lines, it occupies an uncentral position, neither wholly honored above nor wholly humble below.

Its mind is unfixed and its virtuous conduct lacks constancy, hence 'not enduring in virtue.' When virtue lacks constancy, it contradicts itself, and shame and disgrace are presented to it. The shames brought upon it are not singular, hence 'someone may offer shame.'

To endure like this is despised by correctness, hence 'steadfastness brings distress.'

Commenting on the note 'situated in the middle of the three yang lines' to 'hence called steadfastness brings distress': although among three yang lines, it is not the center of either trigram body. 'Beyond all cross-examination': jié means to interrogate.

Its contradictions are manifold, not worth inquiring into principle, which illustrates the depth of its disgrace, as the Analects says: 'What is the use of rebuking Yu?'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

Correct meaning: 'Nowhere to find acceptance' means that for a person without constancy, wherever he goes, none will receive him; hence he has nowhere to find acceptance.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Nine in the Third Place, the third line, lowest-low: The bridge is broken, the road is barred. Boarding the boat and setting the oars, one meets a wild gale once more.
