44. Coming to Meet (姤)

Line 1

If this line changes it transforms into 1. The Creative (Heaven) (乾)

Modern reading

Hexagram 44 Line 1 represents the initial emergence of an encroaching influence at the very base of the structure, where immediate restraint is paramount. The traditional images of being tethered to a bronze brake and of a lean pig pacing restlessly emphasize curbing destructive momentum before it takes root.

I Ching casting

As the sole yin line emerging beneath five yang lines, the initial six sits out of place and seeks to expand unchecked.

The Xiaoxiang commentary highlights that the metal brake checks a soft, creeping trajectory, requiring firm and early intervention rather than passive tolerance. Setting an unyielding boundary at the earliest emergence of disorder prevents systemic decline.

Career

When minor procedural lapses or ethical ambiguities first appear in a project, overlooking them invites widespread organizational friction later. The classical reading advises addressing vulnerabilities before they gain institutional momentum.

Addressing small indiscretions immediately protects your team from compounding liabilities.

Love & relationships

Early patterns of boundary-crossing or emotional evasion must be addressed clearly rather than accommodated out of convenience. Traditional commentary warns that humoring subtle disrespect allows toxic patterns to solidify.

Communicating your non-negotiables early keeps personal relationships healthy and balanced.

Wealth

Small budgetary leaks or unchecked impulse purchases can quietly undermine an otherwise solid financial position if left unmonitored. Classical analysis suggests that imposing mechanical discipline on minor expenses preserves overall solvency.

Plugging small financial leaks early protects long-term stability.

Line statement

1. The first line, divided, shows how its subject should be kept (like a carriage) tied and fastened to a metal drag, in which case with firm correctness there will be good fortune. (But) if he move in any direction, evil will appear.

He will be (like) a lean pig, which is sure to keep jumping about.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Nǐ: pronounced nǐ or nǎi-lǐ. The brake is what stops a carriage; made of metal, its hardness can be known. A single yin begins to be born; remaining still and correct brings good fortune, but advancing forward brings misfortune.

Thus with these two meanings the petty person is admonished not to harm the noble person, so there will be good fortune and no misfortune.

Yet its momentum cannot easily be stopped; hence the image of a lean pig restless and trotting is used to enlighten the noble person so that he may prepare profoundly against it. Tethering means advancing; because it advances, it is checked.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Coming to Meet is a hexagram where yin begins to be born and is about to grow. Once a single yin is born, it grows and gradually flourishes; when yin grows, yang wanes, and the Dao of the petty person grows. Checking it must take place when it is minute and not yet abundant.

A brake is an instrument to stop a carriage, and made of metal, it is firm and strong to the utmost. Stopping it with a bronze brake and moreover tethering it checks it solidly. Checking it solidly so it cannot advance ensures that the firm, correct Dao remains auspicious.

Allowing it to advance will cause it to flourish gradually and harm yang, which brings misfortune. 'A lean pig truly trotting': the sage repeats his admonition, meaning that although yin is minute, it must not be neglected.

A pig is an animal of yin and restlessness, hence taken as a metaphor. Though a lean, weak pig cannot yet be fierce and powerful, its inner heart is set on trotting and thrashing about; trotting means jumping and dashing.

Yin, minute and placed at the bottom, can be called lean; yet its inner heart is ever intent on eroding yang. The noble person and the petty person follow different paths; even when the petty person is faint and weak, he is never without the intent to harm the noble person.

Guarding against him at the subtle beginning leaves him unable to act. The Xiang Commentary says: 'Tethered to a bronze brake: the way of the yielding is being checked.' Checking means drawing and advancing.

Yin begins to arise and gradually advances; the way of the yielding is just being drawn forward. Tethering it to a bronze brake is how its advance is stopped. Preventing it from advancing leaves it unable to erode the correct Dao, which is 'perseverance brings good fortune.'

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Metal is a hard and firm substance. The brake is the master that controls movement, referring to Nine in the Fourth Place.

Six at the Beginning dwells at the start of Meeting; as a single yielding line bearing five firm lines, it embodies a restless substance; finding an encounter it breaks through, dispersing without a master and indulging itself. The yielding as a substance cannot be left unguided.

The duty of a minister or concubine cannot lack chaste devotion; therefore it must be tied to its proper correspondence to attain 'perseverance brings good fortune.' If it is not tethered to one and has somewhere to go, only misfortune will be seen.

A lean pig refers to a female pig. Among pigs, the boar is strong and the sow is weak, hence called a 'lean pig.' 'Fú' is like rushing about restlessly.

When yin substance is restless and willful, a lean pig is an extreme example; this means that an unchaste yin line, having lost what tethers it, acts with lewd ugliness like a lean pig restlessly trotting about.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

From 'Six at the Beginning: tethered to a bronze brake' to 'a lean pig truly trotting.'

Sub-commentary: 'Tethered to a bronze brake, perseverance brings good fortune': metal is a hard and firm substance; the brake is the master that controls movement, referring to Nine in the Fourth Place.

Six at the Beginning is yin in nature; if it tethers itself to its proper correspondence to follow the fourth line, it will be correct and auspicious; hence 'tethered to a bronze brake, perseverance brings good fortune.'

'If it has somewhere to go, it sees misfortune': if it is not tethered to one and moves elsewhere, only misfortune will be encountered; hence 'if it has somewhere to go, it sees misfortune.'

'A lean pig truly trotting': Six at the Beginning dwells at the start of Meeting; as one yielding line bearing five firm lines, this is failing to tether to the bronze brake and having somewhere to go.

Going forward without being tethered is like a lean pig restlessly trotting about; hence 'a lean pig truly trotting.' A lean pig refers to a sow. Among pigs, the boar is strong and the sow is weak, hence a sow is called a lean pig.

Possessing yin nature and being lewd and restless, the sow is especially extreme, which is why it is taken as an allegory. Note: 'The brake is the master that controls movement.' Sub-commentary: Regarding the brake as an object, various interpretations differ.

The followers of Wang Su all take it as a spinning and weaving implement used by women. Only Ma Rong says: 'The brake is under a carriage, used to stop the wheels from moving.' Wang's note says: 'The brake is the master that controls movement,' which aligns with Ma Rong.

Sub-commentary: 'The way of the yielding is checked': the way of the yielding yin must have something to tether and guide it.
