I Ching casting

Holding the central place in the lower trigram, nine at the second position directly oversees the encroaching yin below, managing it without letting it spill over.

The Xiaoxiang commentary notes that the benefit does not extend to guests, meaning internal friction should be resolved entirely in-house. Taking direct personal ownership of internal flaws keeps external relations secure.

Career

Operational hitches or internal team friction should be absorbed and resolved privately rather than escalated to clients or executive stakeholders. In the classical tradition, shielding external partners from internal missteps preserves institutional trust and operational calm.

Containing team difficulties internally maintains your professional reputation.

Love & relationships

Private misunderstandings between partners ought to remain within the relationship rather than being aired to friends or family. Traditional wisdom suggests that introducing outside opinions into private disagreements only magnifies petty conflicts.

Resolving grievances between yourselves fosters genuine mutual trust.

Wealth

Cash flow irregularities or temporary contract hitches should be absorbed through internal reserves rather than by shifting burdens onto clients. Classical readings emphasize managing liabilities close to the source to avoid reputational damage.

Handling financial hiccups discreetly maintains long-term commercial credibility.

Line statement

2. The second line, undivided, shows its subject with a wallet of fish. There will be no error. But it will not be well to let (the subject of the first line) go forward to the guests.

Small Image

‘He has a wallet of fish:’—it is right for him not to allow (the subject of the first line) to get to the guests.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

A fish is a yin creature; the second line meeting the initial line creates the image of having fish in the wrapper. Yet controlling it rests with oneself, so one can still remain free from blame.

If one does not control it and allows it to meet the multitude, its harm will be widespread; hence its image and omen are like this.

Nine in the Third Place is excessively firm and not central; below, it cannot pass down to the initial line, and above, it has no correspondence with the top line; in dwelling it finds no peace, and in walking it makes no advance; hence its image and omen are like this.

Yet since it meets with nothing, it suffers no injury from yin evil; thus though in peril, there is no great blame.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Coming to Meet means meeting. The second line and the initial line are intimately close and meet each other. In other hexagrams, the initial line has a proper correspondence with the fourth; in Coming to Meet, meeting is emphasized.

The way of meeting centers on singleness of devotion. Nine in the Second Place is firm and central, meeting with genuine sincerity; however, Six at the Beginning is yielding yin, with a multitude of yang lines above and having a correspondence to seek.

The nature of yielding yin is rarely capable of steadfast correctness; for the second line, it is difficult to obtain her sincere heart. To fail to obtain a sincere heart in meeting is a deviation from the Dao of meeting. 'Bāo' means wrapped in rushes.

A fish is the finest of yin creatures; yang takes pleasure and beauty in yin, hence the image of a fish is used. If the second line can firmly restrain it like having fish wrapped in rushes, then in its meeting there will be no blame. 'Guests' are those who come from outside.

'Not advantageous for guests': how could fish wrapped in rushes reach the guests? This means it cannot be extended to outsiders. The way of meeting should be devoted to one; having two brings discord.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

The second line's meeting with the initial line must not allow a divided heart toward the outside; it should be like fish wrapped in rushes. Fish wrapped in rushes by right does not reach guests.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

The initial line is yin and at the extreme bottom, hence called 'fish.' An improper yin line dwelling at the beginning of Meeting cannot resist what is close.

The initial line gladly comes of its own accord to supply its own kitchen, which is not an act of violent seizure; hence 'no blame.' Appropriating another's possession to make it one's own gift is something righteousness does not allow; hence 'not advantageous for guests.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Sub-commentary: 'In the kitchen there is fish; no blame': Six at the Beginning is yin and dwells below, hence called fish.

As an improper yin line dwelling at the beginning of Meeting, it cannot resist what is near; therefore it abandons its proper correspondence with Nine in the Fourth Place and gladly fills the kitchen of Nine in the Second Place; hence 'Nine in the Second Place: in the kitchen there is fish.'

The initial line comes gladly of its own accord to serve its kitchen, not being forcibly taken; hence it attains 'no blame.'

'Not advantageous for guests': arrogating another's possession to make it one's own benevolence is not permitted by righteousness; hence 'not advantageous for guests.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

Sub-commentary: 'Righteousness does not extend to guests' means that having another person's property, by righteousness it cannot be extended to guests.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Nine in the Second Place, second line, lower-medium: Wishing to cross yet not yet across, wishing to seek yet forcing the search. The mind has no fixed direction, like one cart pulled at both ends.
