Line statement

2. The second line, divided, shows the stranger, occupying his lodging-house, carrying with him his means of livelihood, and provided with good and trusty servants.

Small Image

‘He is provided with good and trusty servants:’—he will in the end have nothing of which to complain.

Classical commentary

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The second possesses the virtue of yielding compliance, centrality, and correctness. Yielding compliance brings the support of the multitude; centrality and correctness ensure that where he resides he does not lose propriety.

Therefore he can preserve what he possesses, and his young servants also fully display their loyalty and trustworthiness.

Although not equal to the fifth which has the virtue of culture and brightness and the aid of those above and below, he is still an excellent example of dwelling in wandering.

The lodging is where the wanderer finds peace; resources and goods are what the wanderer depends on; young servants are whom the wanderer relies upon.

Gaining access to lodging, holding onto his goods and wealth, and gaining the steadfastness and goodness of young servants—this is the goodness of wandering. The yielding and weak below is the youth; the strong and vigorous on the outside is the servant.

The second is yielding, compliant, central, and correct, thus winning the hearts of those inside and outside; in wandering, those closest to him are his young servants.

It does not speak of 'good fortune' because during wandering, being able to avoid calamity and danger is already good enough.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

What a wanderer relies upon is his young servant; having obtained the loyalty and steadfastness of his young servant, in the end there will be no blame or regret.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

A lodging is a place where a traveler can find peace. 'Huai' means to draw to oneself.

Attaining the position and dwelling in the center, embodying yielding to serve the one above, wandering in this manner one is bound to obtain lodging, draw resources and goods to oneself, and gain the correctness of one's young servants.

A wanderer must not dwell in fullness; hence his excellence reaches its limit in the correctness of young servants. Going beyond this, harm will be encountered. The correctness of young servants is quite sufficient in meaning.

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Correct Meaning states: 'The wanderer comes to a lodging, harbors his resources, and gains the steadfastness of a young servant': attaining the position and dwelling in the center, embodying yielding to support the superior, wandering in this way one will surely be welcomed with peace by the host, find lodging for his travels, gather resources, and also obtain the correctness of young servants, unlike Six at the Beginning who serves in base menial labor; hence it says, 'The wanderer comes to a lodging, harbors his resources, and gains the steadfastness of a young servant.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiSmall Image

The Correct Meaning states: 'In the end there is no blame': a wanderer must not dwell in fullness; if he is too flourishing, he will be harmed by others. Here, being correct only toward his young servants, he ultimately preserves himself from blame.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Six in the Second Place, top-top: The sorrowful face breaks into a smile; the autumn moon hangs over the high terrace; a traveler arrives from a thousand miles away.
