I Ching casting

Sitting atop the lower trigram, this yin line occupies a yang position without central balance or proper correspondence above, leaving it vulnerable to misplaced loyalties.

Traditional commentary laments an alliance with the wrong people, emphasizing that bonding with dubious figures inevitably causes harm. When social circles lack shared ethical boundaries, proximity to bad actors compromises one's safety and reputation.

Simply put, tying your fortunes to untrustworthy people will always cost you dearly.

Career

Workplace dynamics demand strict discrimination regarding alliances, joint projects, and factional allegiances. Getting drawn into political cliques or collaborating with individuals who cut ethical corners leaves you vulnerable to scapegoating when problems arise.

Keeping a prudent distance from toxic office politics safeguards your reputation and peace of mind. Refuse compromised partnerships early so you do not carry the blame for other people's failures.

Love & relationships

Romantic discernment is essential, as superficial charm may easily mask emotional irresponsibility or manipulative tendencies. Investing deeply in a relationship where core values clash or basic accountability is absent will only lead to distress and regret.

Establishing clear personal boundaries and objectively evaluating character protects you from prolonged heartbreak. Step back and protect your emotional well-being whenever respect is missing.

Wealth

Financial ventures face elevated risks of misrepresentation, non-performance, or fraudulent schemes initiated by unreliable associates. Trusting informal promises or lending funds to individuals with questionable financial track records is likely to result in losses.

Exercising due diligence and declining ambiguous deals insulates your balance sheet from avoidable hazards. Guard your resources closely by refusing to co-sign or invest with unstable partners.

‘Union is sought with such as ought not to be associated with:’—but will not injury be the result?

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Yin and yielding, neither central nor correct; supporting, riding, and correlating lines are all yin. Those with whom it holds together are all improper persons; its divination is great misfortune, which goes without saying.

Zhouyi BenyiSmall Image

Occupying a yielding position with yielding softness, holding together outwardly with Nine in the Fifth Place allows it to attain the path of correctness and good fortune. If the diviner is like this, it is correct and auspicious.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

The third line is neither central nor correct, and those it allies with are all neither central nor correct: the fourth line is yin, yielding, and not central; the second line preserves its correlate and holds together with the first line—all are unrighteous and improper persons.

Holding together with improper persons, its error is evident, and regret and humiliation need not even be mentioned. Hence it is lamentable.

To call the centrality and correctness of the second line an 'improper person' is because the meaning is taken differently according to the time.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

When people hold together, it is to seek peace and good fortune. Yet holding together with improper persons, one will inevitably reap regret and humiliation in return; is this not deeply lamentable? It serves as a stern warning against choosing the wrong alliance.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

The fourth line holds together outwardly, while the second line maintains its devotion to the fifth; close by, they do not harmonize, and afar, it has no correlate. Those it would hold together with are not its true kin; hence it says, 'Holding together with improper persons.'

The Xiang says: 'Holding together with improper persons, is this not lamentable?'

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

Correct meaning: "Holding together with improper persons, is this not lamentable?" means that those with whom Six in the Third Place holds together are not its true kin.

The fourth line holds together outwardly, while the second line stays devoted to the fifth; nearby they do not get along, and far away there is no correlate. Those it seeks to hold together with are not its kin; hence there is deep sorrow.
