I Ching casting

As a strong yang line holding office directly beneath the fifth line, Nine at the fourth position acts as the vital hub uniting the masses.

The Xiang commentary notes that its position is technically improper, warning that substantial authority can easily stir suspicion unless exercised with absolute integrity. Maintaining humble loyalty ensures that your influence benefits the collective without triggering backlash.

Career

You occupy a central operational role where peers and subordinates rally around your competence, yet your prominence could trigger executive caution. Classical analysis stresses sharing credit upward and serving as a transparent bridge rather than building a personal empire.

Leading with modesty and institutional loyalty cements your achievements securely.

Love & relationships

Social appeal and charisma are running high, making you the focal point in many interpersonal environments. Such visibility requires clear boundaries so that your primary partnership does not feel threatened by outside attention.

Sincere transparency and steady devotion preserve harmony in your core bond.

Wealth

Multiple opportunities and financial connections coalesce around your efforts, creating promising revenue streams. Because considerable funds pass through your hands, maintaining strict accountability and sharing fair returns with partners is crucial.

Ethical management ensures that substantial financial inflows produce lasting stability.

Classical commentary

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Nine in the Fourth Place encounters the time of Gathering Together: above it is adjacent to the ruler, Nine in the Fifth Place, attaining the gathering of ruler and minister; below it is adjacent to the herd of yin lines in the lower trigram, attaining the gathering of the common people below.

Attaining the gathering of both superiors and subordinates may indeed be called good. However, Nine in the Fourth Place dwells with a yang line in a yin position, which is not correct.

Although it attains the gathering of superiors and subordinates, it must achieve great good fortune before it can be free of blame.

"Great" carries the meaning of comprehensive and all-embracing: only when there is nothing un-embraced is it great; only when there is nothing un-corrected is it great good fortune. With great good fortune, there is no blame.

The gathering of superiors and subordinates indeed sometimes occurs through means not following the correct Way: since antiquity, those who obtained the ruler through perverse logic and crooked ways have been many; those who obtained the people through perverse logic and crooked ways have also existed, such as Chen Heng of Qi and the Ji family of Lu.

Yet could that be considered great good fortune? Could that be considered free of blame? Therefore, Nine in the Fourth Place must be able to achieve great good fortune before it can be free of blame.

Because its position is inappropriate, there is doubt that its actions may not be entirely good; hence it is said that it must achieve great good fortune before it can be free of blame. If it is not entirely good, how could it be great good fortune?

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Treading in a position not its own while occupying the three yin lines below, it attains what it occupies yet loses its proper dwelling.

Dwelling in the time of Gathering Together, occupying without correctness, it must have "great good fortune" and establish great merit, and only then will there be "no blame."

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Sub-commentary states: Dwelling with yang in a yin position clearly means treading in an improper place; moreover, it occupies the three yin lines below, attaining what it occupies yet losing its proper dwelling.

Dwelling in the time of Gathering Together, occupying without correctness is its misfortune. If, in the time of Gathering Together, it establishes great merit and obtains great good fortune, it will then be without blame; hence it says, "Great good fortune, no blame."

The Sub-commentary states: As for "the position is not appropriate," it refers to dwelling with yang in a yin place.

Yicuo JinLine statement

Nine in the Fourth Place, fourth line, Middle-Middle: Words conflict and diverge, like boiling waves in a cauldron. The affair will long cause no harm, but for the moment it is unfavorable.
