Six at the Beginning is yin and yielding, and furthermore neither central nor correct; fearing that it cannot carry through its sincerity to the end, the hexagram admonishes it according to its capacity.
Six in the Second Place, though yin and yielding, attains centrality and correctness; hence though an admonition is given, the words are subtle.
Whenever line statements involve the two ends of gain and loss, whether as models or warnings, they are established according to their respective capacities. "Drawn along, auspicious and without blame": "drawing" means pulling each other along.
In human interactions, when there is mutual seeking there is union; when there is mutual hesitation there is separation.
Six in the Second Place and Nine in the Fifth Place are proper correspondences and ought to gather; yet they are distant from each other and situated among a herd of yin lines. They must pull each other along, and then they will attain their gathering.
Nine in the Fifth Place dwells in the honorable position and possesses the virtue of centrality and correctness; Six in the Second Place also proceeds with the way of centrality and correctness to gather with it—this is the harmony and union of ruler and minister.
How could what they accomplish together be measured? Therefore it is auspicious and free of blame. "No blame" means skillfully mending faults; if the second and fifth do not draw each other along, there will be fault.
"If there is sincerity, it is advantageous to use the yue sacrifice": sincerity (fu) means truth residing within, referring to utmost sincerity. The yue sacrifice is the simplest and scantiest of sacrifices.
Sacrificing with meager offerings does not value complete paraphernalia, but directly interacts with the spirits through sincere intent.
"If there is sincerity" means that if one possesses sincerity, one need not employ external adornments, but solely interacts with the superior with utmost sincerity. Speaking of it through the yue sacrifice means merely presenting one's sincerity.
When superior and subordinate gather together yet prize ornamentation, that is not yet sincere. For when the core is solid, it does not rely on external adornment; this is the meaning of using the yue sacrifice. Sincerity and trust are the foundation of gathering.
Not only in the gathering of ruler and minister, but in all gatherings throughout the world, it rests solely on sincerity.
