I Ching casting

As the primary yang line initiating the thunder trigram below, Initial Nine embodies decisive movement combined with an adaptable mindset, yielding Hexagram 45 (Gathering) upon transformation.

The classical commentary suggests that changing one's standard duties is auspicious if anchored in integrity, especially when going outside one's immediate circle to connect with others.

Stepping outside familiar boundaries with an open heart gathers valuable allies and purposeful momentum.

Career

In professional environments, this line indicates that shifting roles or reconsidering established operational habits can unlock unexpected potential.

The classical tradition observes that going out of the gate to associate brings merit, encouraging proactive networking beyond insular departments or established cliques.

Engaging broadly across cross-functional spaces and welcoming constructive change will substantially widen your career trajectory.

Love & relationships

Relational dynamics benefit when you step past rigid expectations and venture into wider social environments. Traditional interpretations highlight that clinging to an insular comfort zone limits growth, whereas engaging openly allows authentic rapport to develop naturally.

Broadening your social horizons without compromising your core values invites meaningful, reciprocal connections.

Wealth

Financial momentum is often found by exploring new avenues, collaborative ventures, and external networks rather than clinging to routine channels. Classical commentary points to outward engagement as the source of gain, advising an active exchange of information and expertise.

Stepping past existing operational routines to explore wider commercial circles will steadily cultivate fresh opportunities.

Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

The hexagram takes things following as its meaning; the lines take following things as their meaning. Nine at the Beginning, as a yang line dwelling below, is the master of Zhèn and that through which the hexagram becomes Following.

Having something to follow, it develops a specific partiality and alters its constancy. Only when it attains correctness is there good fortune. Furthermore, it must go out the gate to interact, not keeping its following private; then it will achieve merit.

Hence its image and prognosis are like this, which also serves as a caution.

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Nine resides in the time of Following, being part of the Zhèn trigram and the master of movement; it has that which it follows. '官' (guān) means that which one governs and preserves.

Having that which it follows, what it governs and preserves undergoes change; hence it says, 'an office undergoes change; perseverance brings good fortune.'

If what is followed attains correctness, there is good fortune; if it changes but fails to attain correctness, that is an excessive movement. 'Going out the gate to interact brings merit': that which human hearts follow is mostly what they hold dear and love.

The common tendency of human emotion is to see right in those they love and wrong in those they hate; thus the words of wives and children, though mistaken, are often followed, while the words of those one dislikes, though good, are treated as bad.

If one follows purely out of personal affection, that is partisan favor; how could it accord with correct principle? Therefore, going out the gate to interact brings merit.

'Going out the gate' means being free from private intimacy; interacting without self-interest, its following is appropriate and attains merit.

Once there is following and change, the one followed must be correct for there to be good fortune; if the one followed is not correct, there will be remorse and humiliation.

Going out the gate to interact is not tethered to private attachments; its interactions are sure to be correct. Being correct, it is free from error and achieves merit.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

Dwelling at the beginning of Following, having no resonance above, it has no partial attachments; stirring, it can follow the time, and its mind has no fixed master. Following not out of personal desire, it uses desire to follow what is fitting.

Hence the office undergoes change, and following does not lose correctness. Going out the gate without contradiction, what could it lose?

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

From 'Nine at the Beginning' to 'brings merit.' The Zhengyi commentary states: 'An office undergoes change'—'官' means an administrative duty held.

The resolve held in the human heart shares the same term as an official office; hence what the human heart holds is called an 'office undergoing change.'

This initial nine, lacking resonance above, has no partial attachments; following whatever is fit to be followed, its held resolve is able to change. Following only what is correct, 'perseverance brings good fortune.'

'Going out the gate to interact brings merit' means that what it follows is not governed by selfish desire; hence seeing goodness it proceeds to follow it, and going out the gate in this way, its interactions achieve merit.

Regarding the note 'Dwelling at the beginning of Following' to 'what could it lose?': The Zhengyi commentary states: 'Following not out of personal desire, it uses desire to follow what is fitting' means that if it had a resonance, there would be private desire; having no partial resonance, the matters it follows are free from selfish desire.

Following wherever there is correctness, it uses desire to follow what is fitting.

The Zhengyi commentary states: 'An office undergoes change: following correctness brings good fortune' explains the meaning of 'an office undergoes change.'

When the official duty one holds is correct, it can change according to the time; seeing what is correct, one proceeds to follow it, hence 'following correctness brings good fortune.'

'Going out the gate to interact brings merit without error' explains the meaning of 'interaction brings merit.' Because the place it follows does not lose the correct way, going out the gate immediately achieves merit.
