Classical commentary

Zhouyi BenyiLine statement

Nine in the Third Place, being yang, occupies the culmination of strength, while the Top line, also being yang, occupies the culmination of restraint; this is the time when culmination leads to breakthrough.

Moreover, because both are yang lines, they do not restrain each other but advance together, giving rise to the image of 'a good horse pursuing.'

However, being excessively unyielding and advancing precipitously, its divination necessarily cautions with hardship and perseverance, as well as defense and practice, before it is advantageous to have somewhere to go.

The character 'yue' (曰) should be understood as 'ri' (日, daily).

Yichuan YizhuanLine statement

Nine in the Third Place is at the peak of unyielding strength, and the yang of Top Nine is likewise an entity that presses upward; moreover, Top Nine occupies the extreme of restraint and ponders change.

Thus it does not restrain the Third Place, but joins will and responds in harmony to advance with it.

Nine in the Third Place possesses firm and strong talent, and the one above unites its will with it to advance; its advance is like the galloping and chasing of fine horses, which expresses its swiftness.

Although the momentum of its advance is swift, it must not rely on the strength of its talent and the correspondence above to forget preparedness and caution. Therefore, it is fitting to treat matters with a sense of difficulty and follow the correct path of perseverance.

A carriage is an instrument for travel; guards are for self-defense. One must daily practice managing one's carriages and defense; then it will be advantageous to have somewhere to go.

Nine in the Third Place belongs to the body of The Creative (Heaven) and dwells in its correct place, capable of perseverance. At the moment of its precipitous advance, it is cautioned to recognize difficulties and not lose its perseverance.

Once the will is keen on advancing, even with firmness and clarity there may be lapses at times; hence the warning is indispensable.

Yichuan YizhuanSmall Image

The reason it is advantageous to have somewhere to go is that it unites its will with the one above.

The yang nature of Top Nine presses upward, and restraint has already reached its culmination; thus it does not reach down to restrain the Third Place, but unites its will with it to advance together.

Zhouyi ZhuLine statement

In all things, reaching the extreme brings reversal; therefore, when restraint reaches its culmination, breakthrough ensues. The advance of the Initial and Second lines meets the height of restraint, so they cannot ascend.

As for Nine in the Third Place, it ascends toward Top Nine; Top Nine occupies the prosperity of the highway of heaven, where the path is wide open and advance meets no resistance, allowing free gallop. Hence it is said, 'A good horse pursues.'

Treading in its proper position and advancing at the right time, it is on an open path and free from worry of peril and straits; hence 'perseverance in hardship is advantageous.' 'Xian' (閑) means obstacle; 'wei' (衛) means protection.

Advancing at the right time, though one wades through difficulties, there is no disaster; though the carriage encounters obstacles, it remains protected as before. Uniting its will with the one above, it is therefore 'advantageous to have somewhere to go.'

Zhouyi ZhengyiLine statement

The Correct Meaning says: As for 'Nine in the Third Place: a good horse pursues,' the advance of the Initial and Second lines encounters the fullness of restraint, so they cannot ascend.

'When it comes to Nine in the Third Place, it ascends toward Top Nine, and Top Nine occupies the prosperity of the heavenly thoroughfare; the path is wide open, and advance meets no resistance,' so Nine in the Third Place can gallop like a fine horse.

As for 'perseverance in hardship is advantageous,' 'treading in its proper place and advancing at the right time, it is on an open thoroughfare and does not worry about peril and straits,' so it is advantageous to be steadfast and upright amidst hardship.

If it were not for this time, even in ease and keeping upright it would not be feasible, let alone wanting to practice rectitude amidst difficulty.

As for 'practice chariot driving and defense daily,' advancing at the proper time, it wades through hardship without disaster; even if someone wishes to obstruct the chariot, it is shielded and protected; hence it says 'practice chariot driving and defense.'

As for 'it is advantageous to have somewhere to go,' it unites its will with the one above and finds it advantageous to proceed; therefore the Image says: 'It unites its will with the one above.'
